    New Strategic Arm Reduction Treaty?

It seems like you guys are under the impression that fewer nuclear weapons equals a more peaceful world. Is this true? May a decline in nuclear weapons result in an increase in conventional weapons for the security needs of any given state? Fear of nuclear war has kept a small peace... and...

    New Strategic Arm Reduction Treaty?

I understand what you're saying... However... there are many things to consider. The cold war was maintained and ultimately ended because of (IMHO) a build up of arms. Also, in my opinion... I'm not sure that an 'industrial war' is something that is in the near future, but it is still possible...

    New Strategic Arm Reduction Treaty?

Which is probably why Russia reserves the right to opt out of the treaty - and has reserved the right to opt out of the treaty before (which is generally a provision for all parties).... so what's the point of having a treaty? Really what is the purpose of having this treaty... just some...

U.S. President Barack Obama greets U.S. troops at a mess hall at Bagram Air Field in

Is it too outlandish for prior/current members of military on this forum to speculate on that photo based upon their experiences? I don't see how that's 'moronic' thinking... I don't believe anyone is "drawing conclusions" just merely stating that a) it's an interesting photo (which it does seem...

So has anybody gone on and used the King Air 200 type rating earned from VT-35?

Ok you may have to type slow to me... I'm not really understanding what you're saying. The new regs say this about getting a turbojet type through a sim (142): (2) If the type rating is for a turbojet airplane, the applicant must— (i) Hold a type rating in a turbojet airplane of the same class...

So has anybody gone on and used the King Air 200 type rating earned from VT-35?

You're exactly right... I'm not sure if that one proposed rule went into effect or not requiring a lot of experience for initial type ratings (in a sim)...

    Nice article on the SR-71

Had a opportunity to share a car ride from an airport in KS with a former SR-71 pilot. He was an interesting guy. Couldn't help asking him a bunch of dumb questions and performance figures... his reply was always a certain number plus... He shared an interesting story about about a routine...

The Great Universal Health Care Debate w/Poll (note: it just passed both houses)

IMHO, Just because it's law now doesn't mean that it will/can stay law.... it may not be repealed but it may be re-shaped. Honestly here this is the first time in US history people have been mandated to purchase a specific product based solely on citizenship. Idaho just passed a law requiring...

    March 2010 Boards

I'm not sure if this will help or hurt, but here goes.... according to: http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=51782 Navy OCS plans to increase size to 1100 officer candidates for each year for the next five years. There were 633 officer candidates in FY2007, 890 for FY2008, and...

Origin of the 80kt crosscheck and the Jay Beasley legacy

A similar question was asked on another forum and here were the answers: 1) "All these are indeed quite correct, but to answer the initial question: Why 80 KTS, as it might have been chosen 70, or 90, 100, 85.... If I remember well my early aviation days, on a 707, there was no link between...

Origin of the 80kt crosscheck and the Jay Beasley legacy

A failure of either the PF or PNF's ASI is grounds for a RTO. 80kts is below V1... Large difference between ASIs, then RTO... Why can't it just be that simple?

    New Minimum Hours Legislation

$50k in debt is a fairly low number... if someone goes to an aviation school, say ERAU, $120k in debt is not unheard of. I don't really see how this new rule is going to make regionals safer. The Captain is still going to have ATP requirements... so does that mean FOs can just upgrade...
  13. ryan1234

Origin of the 80kt crosscheck and the Jay Beasley legacy

The way I understand it is that 1) it's an airspeed below V1 (generally) and 2) it is a sufficient time (enough airspeed) to stabilize lag error between the pilot and copilot's plumbing.

Anatomy of a Tragedy: Air France 447

AA965 was a very interesting story. Two prior AF, well trained, experienced pilots. This whole Airbus thing... just still trying to figure out the pitot heat failure - the article seems to suggest (which I kind of doubt) that the airspeed sensors are not designed to operate within the...

You have a great point. A lot of people on here had/have good test scores. I guess finding the number of those who posted their stats and were selected/non-selected is probably easier to get than considering how everyone stacks up against the non-AW competition.

    Unbelievable!

In the 70's and 80s, about 10 midairs were reported to the FAA annually which occured above FL180... of course now the number is less since things like TCAS... unless you're a glider: Story (Hawker vs. Glider - luckily no one was killed)...

Crazy Russian Plane-Boat Amalgam with Cruise Missiles

There's a lot of discussion at APC about the whole lift thing. From my understanding, the common ground between Newton and Bernoulli is in the Conservation of energy, mass and momentum. Bernoulli is all about the conservation of energy, while Newton is all about the conservation of momentum. All...

Crazy Russian Plane-Boat Amalgam with Cruise Missiles

That's what the claim is... I think maybe even 550kts for one of them. Which I kinda wonder about the effects of transonic flow in the ground effect. Seems like they really would have needed a very, very precise flight control system.
  23. ryan1234

Crazy Russian Plane-Boat Amalgam with Cruise Missiles

It's a pretty common misconception... the whole ground-effect cushion thing.... What actually happens is that trailing vorticies are blocked resulting in a decrease in induced drag. The decrease in induced drag increases the effective angle of attack of the wing..... resulting in more net lift...

    Got Sig?

Saw the same review of the 516. You guys can have it. I'm happy with this 556... if only for the sheer fact you don't really see them at the range that much and it's not just another AR. On the positive side... I heard it lists for around $1300 ... which will probably cause the other gas...

They were not inexperienced pilots. The PIC had around 5800hrs TT, many of which included CASA time in Alaska, which is quite a hostile environment for flying. He had 3 type ratings, and seaplane time as well. The SIC had almost 2300 hrs TT. They each had 33 hrs in country - inexperience in...

FAA MCA - Military Competance Airplane

Thanks for the clarification - what you described doesn't sound too different from a normal civilian instrument checkride though, it would just consist of those things you mentioned plus a partial panel approach, and maybe a DME arc.

FAA MCA - Military Competance Airplane

Call me crazy but the FAA is not infallible. Part 61 says this about military aviators wanting an instrument rating. A rated military aviatior: (1) Passed an instrument proficiency check by a U.S. Armed Force in the aircraft category for the instrument rating sought; and (2) Received...

That article was a slight bit misleading. The original attitude indicators have the brown on top and blue on bottom as well not just the difference in mini-airplane movement.
