    King Kat opening 31OCT2008

My son is currently in a holding pattern at Corpus waiting for Primary. He'll be there. He may very well become the very first "second generation" Cubi Cat veteran. Only after you get older do you realize how incredibly important these seemingly silly and stupid traditions really are...

    Reloading Ammo

I've always used an RCBS Rock Chucker, and been very satisfied. I was never concerned as much with volume of product; I reloaded in order to have ammunition loaded with the bullets I wanted for hunting. It was a little on the slow side, but a big advantage to reloading for me was a chance to...

The Great Pirates off the Somali Coast thread

What Flash said. Still, I'd really like to think that somewhere off the coast of the Horn of Africa, in a grey ship bobbing quietly, there's a SEAL team cleaning their weapons and talking quietly amongst themselves..........

Air Force F-16 pilot earning his pay.

We had a detachment of two Marine NOGs a/c attached to our squadron for evaluation and testing. One night, on a mission with one NOGs a/c and two of our a/c, the NOG got an engine shot out just as it got to its target. As luck would have it, the Major in charge of the det had just arrived...

BOMBING'S MY BUSINESS .. and business is GOOD

Watching a flight of two Phantoms put in a napalm strike will always be one of three iconic images I have of Viet Nam. Watching them come in low and flat, and watching the cans tumble into the foliage was an incredible sight. I can't imagine what the experience was like for the guys on the...

None braver...tribute to VT-8, Battle of Midway

In an age when the loss of a single helicopter due to simple mechanical failure makes the evening network news, the level of violence, carnage, and sheer bravery that took place on a regular basis in WW II is inconceivable to us today. Think about the dedication and selflessness required of...

Joe Garagiola was once a catcher in the majors, but didn't make it big. With a great sense of humor and an ability to laugh at himself, he became a very successful anouncer. His favorite story: Coach; "I got a new mitt for Garagiola". GM; "You made a good trade". The only player...

Looking for gouge? Ask your Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation here (Part 1)

If you're going to get serious about CAS for the troops, a gun has some very significant advantages. 1. Accuracy. Granted, I was a lot lower and slower, but I shot bad guys off of the 5-meter wire around an outpost with a SUU-11 minigun with no problems. I've done that with 5-inch rockets...

    Let's see your guns!

It shoots better than my son.:icon_tong I'm not sure of the total price. I try my best to not keep track of it. Most of the stuff (Timney trigger, action, wood, scope & rings, etc.) were just picked up here and there. My time to put together, shape and hand-rub stock was free.

Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in .270. American classic. I've killed Grizzly, elk, deer, Stone sheep, Dall sheep, Aoudad, and antelope with it. Never had a problem.

    Special Operations

In Viet Nam, Riverine was a highly desireable set of orders for young officers. SWO jgs would be in command of several boats, and would have the opportunity for lots and lots of face-to-face combat time. The bad ones were quickly weeded out by the senior officers, and the good ones were...

    First custom rifle

Good choice on the caliber. I recently finished a 6mm Reminton on a pre-war Mexican Mauser action, in a Claro walnut stock. Gave that one to my son. The next rifle I put together will be a the .257 on another short Mauser action. Great caliber for deer and antelope. As much as I love the...

    03 Springfields

"Gimme a link...." Yeah, right. I'm too old to "give links". :icon_wink In Col. Townsend Whelen's books "Small Bore Rifle Handbook", 1935, and his "The Hunting Rifle", 1940, he talks at length about the '03, and also the M2 version. In one of the books he talks about various units having...

    03 Springfields

You're absolutely correct. Every slight alteration of a collectible firearm lowers its value to some degree. However, I don't collect firearms. I shoot everything I have. I will clean them up a little, put on a modern scope if needed, and shoot the hell out of them. The very last thing I...

Sporterized This is why I asked what "semi-sporterized" means. This is my ORIGINAL 03 Springfield M2. Its a full sized 03, but is a 22 cal rimfire. Made for marksmanship training for the Army's snipers and rifle teams. This is completely original, except I removed the peep sight ring and I...

    Air Medal Statistics

As for "different medals", he is also a different Chief. The one I met that had the DFC was at EUCOM in 72-73. I know it was a DFC, because I told him he was masquerading as an AF 1LT. The AF 0-5 in the recce center failed to see the humor in that. The dates of Lt Cash's kill don't match...

    Air Medal Statistics

If you're serious about this, I would recommend looking into Viet Nam-era records for the Navy Seawolves, and for the Army the WO's that flew for the First Air Cav. Not only do they HAVE the medals, you can rest assured that they EARNED them. The latter means more than the former.

    03 Springfields

I don't know what "semi sporterized" means, but between the wars several gunsmiths turned out sporterized '03's. Griffin & Howe was the most famous, but Hoffman Arms and Segley Arms are very, very collectible. The latter two would be worth in excess $1500 in decent condition. G&H way more...

Wellll, look what followed me home from the gunshow

Not just a pre-64, but a pre-war M70. It has an hourglass-shaped rear tang, right? Is it a target model? I don't see the barrel boss all standard-weight M70s had.

    No Visible Means of Support

HAL-3, the Seawolves, was one of the Navy's most active, aggressive, and heavily decorated squadrons in Viet Nam. An awful lot of river boat crews and SEALs owe their lives to them. We worked a lot of targets with them, and I was always impressed with their courage and their performance. I...

    Rumsfeld flew......?

Off the subject a little, but while I was at EUCOM in Germany I flew VIP flights with the AF for flight time. On one flight I flew Rumsfeld from Stuttgart to Brussels. Big Day

She didn't need to select. The Navy was kind enough to "select" for her. She was told she got what she got "because you're female". That was a quote from the StuCon LT. She's on AW. I don't think my son's on. He's a Marine; we're not certain he's functionally literate.:icon_wink

Return of Turboprops to CAS role?

Sounds like a great idea, having longer loiter time and faster "get to the target" time than a helo, and more accurate ordnance delivery that the fast movers. Good idea, that is, until you fly against guys armed with something more than pitchforks and AK's. If they are really going to do it...
