    Custom build

If you want to use a Mauser action (my favorite for custom rifles), try to find a good short action, like a Mexican Mauser or Peruvian Mauser (both manufactured in Germany), or a German K98, either small-ring or large-ring. Find an action manufactured between the wars if possible (better...

    Swiss low level video

The Swiss AF are great pilots. Their a/c are dispersed in caves cut back into mountains, and behind blast doors. On a scramble, the doors open, a fighter taxis out to a highway that gets closed off, and takes off on the highway. Awesome to see. Happiest guy I think I ever met was a USN LT...

Is it wrong to be happy about this?

Brett, you of all people should know this, since you are our official go-to guy for all bodily functions. I won't bore you with dry, dull definitions, but basically its anything that Hollywood, New- Age types, and yuppies decide is "Yucky". Also sometimes determined by low price or easy...

The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

OK, here's the easiest solution. Two leathers. One, you keep as a "slick". Can wear it anythime, anywhere. Nothing on it but nametag with wings. The other. load it up with all the irreverant, obscene, humorous, politically incorrect, and "been there, done that" patches your command will...

    The Raptors have landed...at Oceana

I can't begin to tell you how many times I was cleared in on a questionable target. Sometimes a province command that decides to create a free fire zone (never mind the village with the women hanging out their laundry and the kids playing in the dirt), or by some scared 20 year old kid scared...

    Riverine force

Whoa! Experiencing severe flashbacks! And, I might add, loving it. A4s was right. Lots of the boat drivers were former flight students. They would be classmates of ours for awhile in flight school, then disappear. Suddenly we would run in to them in the O-club in Binh Thuy.

    Israeli + Palestinian= **** storm latest developments

I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that the two worst things to be holding would be 1.) a pork chop in a wolf den, and 2.) a captured Israeli soldier. With either one, someone or something is coming to get you. Get rid of them both as fast as you can.

    U.S.S. Gerald Ford?

Some time back carriers were often named after famous battles. Saratoga, Lexington, Antietam. (In keeping with that, how about Chickamauga?) Don't know how we got into naming them after insects, like Hornet and Wasp.

Navy Aircraft Currently in Use/Soon to Retire..

VS-41 hosted us as the VAL-4 RAG, since the jet guys at Miramar didn't want us. Until, that is, they started seeing our BDA reports. For the VS-41 decommissioning activities, rest assured that VAL-4 alumni will be well-represented, and we plan to drop-check the I-Bar one more time.

Monday and Tuesday was the I-bar in the old BOQ right across the road from the VS hangers. VS-41 (about to be decommissioned), VS-37 Screwbirds, and VS-5 Sawbucks, if I remember correctly.

What is your favorite Navy/USMC aircraft?

Our squadron (VAL-4) was supposed to be comprised of Spads in Viet Nam, but just before we were formed they gave them to the VNAF. We were heartbroken. Instead, we borrowed about 24 OV-10's from the USMC instead. For pure beauty, though, I don't see how you can beat the A-5.

    What did Rumsfeld fly?

While stationed at HQ, US European Command in Stuttgart, Germany, I flew Rumsfeld on a VIP flight to Brussels, in about 1974 or 75. All AF crew except for me, flying CP and wearing my whites. He came forward to say hello to us, saw the only Navy guy on board, and could not have been...

    Women at OCS

No, Neo, I'm afraid I'll have to agree with HighlyRandom on this one. Any Good Credit Cards

I agree with Fly. IMHO, its essential that each of you have a CC. 1. In emergencies, like driving cross-country and your Mustang (Navy) or truck (USMC) breaks down, you might not have enough in your checking acct at that moment to cover it. 2. When renting a car, not only do the rental...

    8x57 Mod 98 Mauser with a story

A good Model 98 Mauser is one of the finest bolt actions ever made. Any model, large ring or small ring, from one of the better factories like Mauser (Oberndorf), Brno, or DWM just can't be beat, especially by any of the "modern" actions. Great strength, great gas venting, excellent steel. I...

    Sidearms

In Viet Nam, we were issued .38's, and the paraloft made bandoleers for us if we wanted them. In addition, most of us carried snub-nosed .38's loaded with star shells, to use like rescue flares if we were in the jungle. We could, however, carry any personal weapon we wanted, and several of us...

    Smith & Wesson??? "new" M&p??

A4s, remember the early S&W 9mm autos the SEALs used in Viet Nam? They cleaned up the ramps and feeds, fitted them with silencers, and used sub-sonic ammo in them. They called them "hush puppies", because they used them to shoot guard dogs in the VC camps. They didn't seem to have too much...

Your chances are....(penalty box for those who can't help asking about their chances)

You have a 50/50 chance of acceptance. You either get accepted or you don't. That's 50/50. If you agonize over it, however, and choose not to apply, your chances for acceptance drop markedly. Read some of the various posts here an AW. Based on grammar, spelling, and syntax alone, it will...

    French unrest

Unrest Sounds like the unrest is continuing, with over 3,000 vehicles having been torched thus far. The main problem seems to be that the there is no central control over the trouble-makers, leaving Mr. Chirac with no one to surrender to. We trust this will soon be resolved.

The sniveling comes from the people who think they know exactly what they want, and will be crushed if they don't get it. Why it's good to be in Naval Aviation

Being a young and dumb jg, you ask the Skipper if you can take an enlisted guy along on an airstrike because "What the hell, I've got an empty back seat". Why it's good to be in Naval Aviation

Getting scrambled by a SEAL team that's surrounded by sleeping bad guys. Being asked to place 5-inch rockets 5 meters in all directions from their smoke, and being able to do it without hurting a single good guy. Letting them buy you a beer a few nights later.
