Road to 350: What Does the US Navy Do Anyway?

Even if we could, what would be the cost of modernization? Slapping Harpoons on Iowa battleships in the 80s and retrofitting AEGIS BMD capes to a Spruance Destroyer are not in the same universe. Oh by the way, out biggest costs are in O&M and Manning. More ships just exacerbates that.

Life as an aviator on a "small" ship?

Fairly common nowadays. HSC(CVW) is plussed up airframes and people compared to the HS construct. The Expeditionary squadrons still take Gator SAR, other USNS, LCS, land dets, whatever else.

Life as an aviator on a "small" ship?

HSC(CVW) squadrons are all manned for a USNS Det. Whether it happens that way or not depends on a lot of factors. Obviously great deal if you can get it.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Spot 5 (I think, been a while) was so close to the cat track if you landed even on the left line of the box they wouldn't be able to chain down the left mount. Much embarrassment having to call Boss to respot. Suck less 2P!

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Carrier Helos, no, or at least like the Tailhook types. However, you will be given shit in the ready room from other JOs for leaving Anti-collision lights on after landing (verboten) or missing the spot so severely you had to relift and respot in order to be chained.

    Which Regional to go To

This is about the only thing that gives me pause as a Helo->T-6 guy. I can get to ATP mins, I can afford to do a few years at a regional building time/121 experience, but many years there might not be tenable. The upcoming hiring wave from retirements is the only thing that makes the picture...

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

Happy Navy Birthday to all those raised their hands and were part of this great tradition of Naval Aviation. I'm posting this surrounded by Naval Aviation museum relics, a monument to the sacrifice of those who came before us all. I'm proud to be a part of this team.

NEWS Navy to end ending all enlisted ratings!

Replacing a one syllable acronym with 3+ was a mistake. Break Break I love a lot of our Naval Traditions, but I'm not sad about this change. We were the only service to tie job to rank and it was confusing as hell. Job type slang (Mechs, Framers, Ordies, etc) will live on just like it does in...

    NEWS Bloomberg goes after CH/MH-53E

I'm glad the Top Men at NAVAIR are on the case, but this isn't rocket science. It's parts on the shelf, qualified maintainer end strength, and OPTAR. OFRP "right sized" them to a budget number for the last 5 years. Even new airframes (-60R/S, -18E/F, etc) are feeling the pain. Edit: Not trying...

    Primary Flight Question?

That sounds right. The one I know of for put into YG09 but was finishing shore duty, so his timing is all messed up. Caveat that with the fact that most of them will hit sanctuary by the time they're up for O-4 by virtue of their prior time, so they are "free agents" to a degree. Edit: Also...

Yes That's the current standard issue dry suit for USN Rescue Swimmers (or was as of a few months ago). Vendors and brands change. The pilot one (different) with pockets and name tag spot is actually pretty nice compared to what I was told was the previous kit in the mid 2000s.

New Vortex Ring State Recovery Technique

Maybe it could work in something different than a Robbie, I don't know. The little I've heard about them has indicated their rotor system is different than the Bell/Sikorsky stuff I've flown and more temperamental. All anecdotal. The video you posted I've seen before. My understanding is the...

No mentions of applicability in something bigger than a Robbie. Call me a bit of skeptic. Also what does this gain you that accelerating forward doesn't? You already dorked up the approach and got into VRS. Go around and try again.

    Another JSF thread

I also understood the Navy's version had some beefed up landing gear, structural components, and wing fold design stuff that basically put it #3 in the design queue. Air Force and Marines came first. Edit: Also LOL at the legacy Hornet fleet not having "aircraft issues".
