How different is a military career than a corporate job?

I'm out of this thread. Enjoy your continued collective admiration of the mediocre.

Thanks dude, an MPRA guy laughing at us... Have fun with your horses...

How different is a military career than a corporate job?

Please. Point is, you're a failed SWO and have no credibility in that world anymore. Thanks for your service and have fun servicing my 2Ks for the rest of your career.

How different is a military career than a corporate job?

Dude give me a break, your bio says you were a SWO on a PC and FFG; do those even have CICs? The notion that the coolest things you do as a SWO are as a DIVO just isn't necessarily true.

You were never a DH, were you? I'll take running a combat watch team over doing MOBOARDs on that tanker 5 miles away...any day, thanks. Do DHs do more admin? Of course. I've think that's pretty common in the working world as you move up the ladder.

Honors Upon Death of United States Civil Official

Correct they are - there's a message that attributes the current half-masting to her death. Mentioned it's in effect until her interment. No one's shooting guns off...

Should I stay or should I go? Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love HSC.

It's really not my lane - I've always understood the Sierra to have much better payload re: A/S weapons. Based on the last page of results, sounds like I'm right, but not to the extent I thought... Also, I'll raise the LOG issue again. That's why I always wished I had a Sierras onboard when I...

Should I stay or should I go? Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love HSC.

Kind of what I was hinting at, these days you usually have a US MPRA for a big transit, not always but usually. That kind of reduces the advantage of the Romeo for those transits given the Sierra's superior SUW punch. Agree that non-US MPRA tend to be useless, just about anywhere in the world.

Should I stay or should I go? Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love HSC.

Not going to get into specifics but on most high profile chokepoint transits these days you have other assets pumping info to you. The Sierra, laden with small-ship killing weapons, can pack a lot more punch than a Romeo. It's a trade-off for sure, and I'd say the more contentious the...

Should I stay or should I go? Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love HSC.

There historically isn't, though having done an independent deployment as an OPS, I see a lot of value in having a mixed Det of 1x Romeo and 1x Sierra. The Romeo is invaluable to our primary mission as CRUDES, but it doesn't do LOG well at all. Plus, if I were doing a SoH/BAM transit without...

    ANCC

Never been to ANCC, but had a few friends that were members at the Army Navy Club downtown. Very nice, wasn't worth the money to me (but I was already a LT too).

Congrats to LT. Swegle (aka Charles Edward never-ending question thread)

Pretty cool video by Big Navy. Crazy to me that SWOs already have a retired Black Female O-10; and here's the first TACAIR Black Female O-2. Better late than never. Best of luck to LTJG Swegle. shorturl.at/uAGJQ

Should I stay or should I go? Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love HSC.

You can wank all you want that I don't think Navy Rotary should waste their time focusing on this mission set, but...DUDE, your OWN community doesn't think you have a place in that world. I know virtually nothing about PR at the tactical level. I just have a good amount of exposure to war...

Should I stay or should I go? Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love HSC.

I've said it here before. The PR mission set is a relic. We have been spoiled by decades of wars in which we had unchallenged air superiority. It's been a great capability in OIF/OEF/OIR/et al, but not one relevant to future wars. #1 threat to current PR capability is distance; #2 threat is...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

Disagree, though I usually listen to them at work in the background and on my commute. Have listened to a few of Jello's as well - good channel, and he seems like a good dude.

    UFOs?

I'm willing to entertain different possibilities. At first blush, no doubt, by far the most likely explanation is some type of black program (maybe ours, maybe some other countries'). But 16 years is a long time for something like that to be kept completely quiet.
  18. azguy

    UFOs?

What @sevenhelmet said. Not quite hoping someone might bite, but just that some on here must know who she is. To have been a fleet JO in 2004, she would have to be a ~20-yr CDR by now. There can't be that many female, O-5, VFA 1310s running around on active duty. I can definitely understand...

    UFOs?

I know it sounds tin-foil-hat'y, but I don't know how you can dismiss the CDR Fravor incident. 4 aircrew, 2x APG-73, SPY-1...all telling the same story, later correlated with the famous FLIR video. He's alluded to his wingman, a still-active, female, pilot. Would be incredibly curious to hear...

No surprise, it's an pretty amazing organization which has brought some fantastic capabilities to the fight. Definitely an "operational" IWC unit.

CO of USS Theodore Roosevelt makes quite the statement.

The other WCs come off horribly in that report. The Cruiser CO involved is an awesome leader and has been on the golden path for his last few tours. Hope this doesn't affect him.

“Information Warfare Is a Second-Class Commissioning Community”

That doesn't make sense because 18XX is a tiny fraction of the officers that NROTC makes. Should we put a SUPPO, SEAL, EOD Tech on each NROTC staff as well?

    SWO Career Paths

Yes, this. Picking an "independent deployer" isn't a thing. I've been doing SWO OPS stuff for a while now and if you asked me to pick a list of "independent deployers" outside of my homeport, I couldn't... Picking a platform that is deploying is a lot easier to do on Google. I managed it as...

    Presidential Valet

I want to say that some Navy 3/4-stars have a CS on staff as a personal valet. They do the dry cleaning, put together their uniforms, organize official dinners, etc. Knew a 3-star aide (OPNAV Staff) that said this was a thing.

    UFOs?

CO of USS Theodore Roosevelt makes quite the statement.

Good explanation - you changed my mind on the issue somewhat. Having spent time in FDNF recently I don't really buy the TSC sensitivities at all. Never have I operated in a theater that seems less concerned with TSC than C7F. I was, however, viewing this from the lens of perfect 20/20...

CO of USS Theodore Roosevelt makes quite the statement.

You're right, I am assuming that. Occam's razor. It's hard to fathom that the spread of COVID on TR is from some tech rep or PCS guy that COD'd-on; nothing to do with 5,000 people going ashore in Vietnam earlier this month... Could it be both? Of course. But your post has an air of...

    Surface Warfare to CEC

Plenty of reasons to lat transfer from SWO. They are usually personal; the most personal reason being that your average human being isn't well-suited to being a SWOs (not bragging about being a SWO, not talking shit about SWOs, just stating a fact). Further, as others have said, 4 vs 2...

CO of USS Theodore Roosevelt makes quite the statement.

Fair enough @Farva01 - I'm not trying to shit on you or the guys on the deckplates out there. I know it's getting attention and and you guys have been getting after it. The "shit show" comment isn't an indictment on your response; you guys are playing the hand you were dealt. My larger...

CO of USS Theodore Roosevelt makes quite the statement.

I'm not on the ground but I'm not talking out of my ass either. As a counter-point, if you're in TRSG and think everything is going swimmingly, I'd argue you're too close to the problem to have big-picture SA or be objective.
  33. azguy

CO of USS Theodore Roosevelt makes quite the statement.

This has been bubbling up for a while now. This letter from the CO, while extremely unorthodox, just further underscores what a shit show it is out there. I'm sure it will all work out eventually but it's a bad look. Additionally, I hope someone really questions the ORM and decision-making of...

Really stupid questions about life as a SWO and anything else not aviation related [mod dog wuz hərə]

That's crazy. You make my point in this post. One cruiser costing more than an aircraft carrier?!?! A Kirov in "leading position" ... you are so brainwashed.

Really stupid questions about life as a SWO and anything else not aviation related [mod dog wuz hərə]

Really stupid questions about life as a SWO and anything else not aviation related [mod dog wuz hərə]

The discussion of FFG COs is OBE as the last of them is now in major command. The new discussion would be LCS CO vs DDG CO (or LSD CO), not really worth much discussion IMO. These are simply slating decisions. Slightly dated example, but same as comparing CO of a Hornet vs Rhino squadron...

Really stupid questions about life as a SWO and anything else not aviation related [mod dog wuz hərə]

The numbers are slim across the board, I'm sure we've all known many phenomenal O-6s that don't make it. SB has some interesting stats on this actually - once you get to very senior ranks, something like a 30-40% of all 3/4-stars are nuke-trained, between SWO(N), Sub drivers, and post-CVN command.

Really stupid questions about life as a SWO and anything else not aviation related [mod dog wuz hərə]

VADM Rowden, the last SWO Boss, was a nuke; I had a CSG CDR recently who was a nuke. Anecdotal, but I think they tend to do fine for flag (statistically on par with non-nuke).

What are my options if I receive an unfavorable pre-screening for my security clearance?

I did one (once already cleared) when transferring to a job requiring regular TS access. Didn't go through the SF-86 and was held over the phone...just a bunch of yes/no questions that went through the major disqualifiers. Guessing this is pretty similar to what the OP is describing. Yes. I...

SWO Couple Signs For Department Head Together

This is hard to believe. If for no other reason that the size of a department varies drastically across the different classes of ship; as I'm sure it does for different types of squadrons.

    SWO Leather Jacket

I won't turn down a free jacket but my problem is that as a guy that loves going to sea and serving operationally, it's not functional. Threadjack... but to get a bit further in the weeds, COLA plummeted a few years ago. It's better now but not where it was in the Golden Days. Being "U/W a ton" ... there is some divergence between the aviator and SWO FDNF experience. A SWO in the MX Phase these days can easily spend 12-18++...

Single JOs don't live on base in Japan. You'll get OHA; major difference between OHA and BAH is you can't "bank" OHA. They pay you the exact amount of your rent. You get a monthly allowance for utilities which you can "bank."
