OCS SWO Board 10 Feb 20

congrats! I'm similar to you. Pro Rec y from previous board, but I don't graduate until June. Do you have any info about how the process of getting a finsel/OCS date works for those of us still in school and needing to finish our degree? My recruiter doesn't seem to know. I'm just worried that I'll have to wait a long time after graduation to go to OCS due to how fast seats fill up.
I'm not quite sure unfortunately. My recruiter only told me I already had a date, and said the final paperwork (I'm assuming the finsel?) will come a couple weeks before the class date. Hopefully someone will be able to provide more useful information, my apologies. Congrats btw!

my recruiter said when i'm out of bootcamp, but he said i should wait until i have an eval. im also hoping to have my package already will help the process too. He said expect to wait 6 months to a year to resubmit
I'd expect to wait closer to at least 2 years. You'll have your bootcamp, followed by training school (could be anywhere from a couple months to over a year and a half for something like CTI), then you'll finally get to your first duty station. Once there you'll be expected to obtain your respective qualification pin/possibly deploy/etc before your command is even willing to consider to let you go. I think a more realistic timetable would be between 2-2.5 years at the earliest to get to apply after initial enlistment.

Thanks, sounds good! What's your date? And how're you handling prepping for OCS while finishing school? I'm finding it hard to balance tbh

The application for those enlisted and those who are not is different, pretty much nothing in this application can be used again except transcripts and test score.

The wait until you submit can vary, the problem you will have is your first eval will most likely be a very average one as the new person, some commands have varying requirements, for instance on nearly every ship I was on the Department Head would not recommend a person for an officer program until they were qualified all engineering watches (I was an engineering type).

Now maybe you are going to be a YN or something that will provide you a different experience, however since we don't know the rate you are going into you could be looking at 6 months, or you could be looking at 2 years.

my OR said we’ll need a special request to get an OCS date during this year. Does that mean this fiscal year? Any idea what that means? Haha

that's fine because I actually wanted to apply as intel, but have no work experience. I'll get my work experience then apply for intel instead of SWO.lol

You're in the same exact position I am in. I want to eventually go into the FBI, Im too young as of now and don't have the work experience needed. I wanted Intel to have a familiar background to the FBI while having prior military as a resume booster. My recruiter informed me that Intel was taking mainly people with a background in Computer Technology, Security, etc. so I went SWO instead in hopes of one day being able to switch to Intel. If I don't make it onto this board I will be joining enlisted as well and seeing where I go from there. Maybe Ill run into you down the line!
