We killed two of their commanders. They have a funeral where 50 of their people are trampled to death, retaliate by shooting missiles that kill none of our people, and shoot down an airliner full of their people that just took off from their main airport.

I was in when the Vincennes shot down the Iran airliner in 1988.
Emotions are running high and folks are tight as a drum. This is exactly when someone gets excitable and pulls the trigger on the wrong target. Super easy to do something stupid right now, and it sounds like some dude did it.
Someone pulled the trigger on the wrong target or the battery was set to automatic, which is almost the same thing.

Yes, lots of Canadians. It’s sad regardless of the nationalities of the victims, but it’s not like they were people who just happened to be flying through. They were likely returning from visiting family, and this blunder will not go over well there.
If I were sitting in the terminal waiting for my flight, and watching the outbound missiles on the TV, and hearing about how they were going to fuck up any incoming attacks, then my flight started boarding a few hours later.....

I was flying in a P-3 working with Vincennes and her helo when it happened.
The after a quick gas stop I was back on top the wreckage looking for survivors and taking pictures less than 2 hours later.
Quite the rapid change in emotions... Yeah! to Oh Shit! in the blink of an eye.
To this day I still say something was fishy about the whole thing. We took pictures of floating bloated bodies. It takes days not 2 hours for bodies to bloat. Vincennes definitely f’ed up but there is more to the story I don’t think we’ll ever know.
