Cut off online contact with an acquaintance of mine who 2xFOSed out of SELRES IDC land when he started cussing me out and calling me a company man for making O-4 . . . I presume after a few too many adult beverages.
He sounds like a real winner.

There are other communities that aren’t as skewed that way as URL. I seem to recall the 18X5 crowd taking it in the collective shorts a few years ago.

This. Advancement to O-4 in my designator was about 60% after you cut out the PERS fuzzy math. 1835 was below 50%. It also LOOKS like everybody makes it, because the people who don't simply....disappear. This thread piqued my curiosity because it appeared to offer a second chance. (It kind of days, but not one worth pursuing.)

I didn't know you could FOS out of SELRES, I thought they let you hang out until you hit HYT?

Officers aren’t subject to HYT, we’re controlled by DOPMA. If an O-3 is a 2xFOS for O-4 he’s separated, or retired (if eligible), the first day of the seventh month after the lost comes out. Just like active duty.

An O-4 is kicked out at 20 years, typically waived to 24 for URL. I think there’s something about if you get 18 good years you get 3 years or something to get your last two good years?

Yes. If you can get to 18 good years, they’ll give you three years to get your last two.

If you can only get to 17 and 11months, your out of luck (it does actually seem fair to me).

Well that's interesting, because the SELRES recruiter was perfectly happy to help me with a package after my 4th FOS. Just goes to show what a clown show it is, I guess.

AD FOSs =/= Reserve FOSs, apparently

I can't recall details but I was reading the FY19/20 continuation policy yesterday and I noticed that IWC is included along with Medical/JAG designators so if anything there seems to be flexibility to get your 20. I'm not sure if the IWC being included is new but I don't recall seeing anything in the past that lumped IWC into any category along with medical before

I think it is up to 24 years total time in service they give you to get to 24 good years.

Depending on the rank, I've known plenty of folks to get O-5 past their 2nd, 3rd, 4th...and so on, looks.

Are those 4th looks combined AD and reserve or strictly reserve?

Also it might be different with O-5 boards vice O-4 but my info for the 2-3 looks applied for the O-4 board.

Just reserve, and I believe your info about O-4 boards is accurate.

AC FOSes don’t count. RC FOSes count for DOPMA purposes if you’re an O-3 bucking for O-4. If you’re an O-4, you keep getting looked at until 20 or your waivered continuance, then have to retire if you don’t pick up. Same with O-5 at I believe 28 years. TL;DR, you get looked at until forced to separate or retire for TIG purposes, but for everything other than O-3, those TIG purposes generally run into retirement eligibility.

What is the average total commissioned time in service before your first O-4 look and how often is your second / third looks?

Is it seven years (make O3 + 3 TIS) before in zone for first look?
Then if FOS, you are looked at each year for two more times then separated for a total of 10 years TIS?
