Bubbas, I am getting my first firearm this Christmas, a Sig SP2022 .40S&W. I wanna put rounds through it but not break the bank. I'm thinking I'll only need a few hundred rounds a year. I live in CA (womp, womp). Any ideas for brands, prices, vendors for the ammo?

Can't imagine it's a "high demand" issue…maybe "low demand"? Too bad if that's the case.
Some truth to what you say sorta..... it's considered a "limited run" by both Rem & Win as Midway advertises it. I bought 50 cases maybe 2 years ago, NIS right now but hit the "notify me' when it's available again. Maybe it's like Bock Beer?

40 S&W is pretty common OTC at Wally's World, no real shortage I don't think.

If there's a Crossroads of the West gunshow anywhere near you, check out their bulk cans of factory reloads. Usually pretty decent for common rounds like FMJ, etc.

A place to start. I don't personally shoot .40, but generally places like AIM or SGammo.com are pretty good resources. Palmetto State Armory used to be a pretty good source, but I've watched their ammo shipping prices rise pretty significantly over the last few years (and that's just to FL). I think I pay as much to FL now as I did to CA a couple of years ago. Still, sometimes you can get good deals there. I've found Ammoman.com to be hit and miss (mostly miss) for cost/round for a lot of types, though sometimes his "shipped" pricing you break even when going out to CA.

For the "usual supsect" ammo, I never really found deals at Crossroads unless you got there at the crack of dawn and it was a very specific ammo type (often either surplus or some sort of Russian bulk). Even .22, once it became the equivalent to unicorn farts wasn't competitive, though that's obviously a special case, even today.

ammmoman is your friend. I've reloaded for years so I haven't purchased any ready to fire ammo in a long time. If memory serves, no tax, free shipping.

Sort of an ammo question. Since this threat is revived and active I'll ask here.

Just got back from my second full honors service at Arlington National Cemetery. First time my father in law. This time, my mother in law. Both US Army. If you have never been to one it is way awesome, especially for a senior officer. I was in charge of arrangements for my father in law. This time it was my sister in law, the eldest child. At a dinner that evening after the service, she presented to all her brothers and sisters empty cartridge cases she said were from the rifle volley. Last time we did this, no one offered the spent rounds to me or anyone from the family. I suppose they will do so if requested or maybe it is procedure now. So here is what is curious. The casing given my wife was a 5.56. The Old Guard rifle company uses M14s. I didn't say anything, but it sure seems fishy. Anyone have knowledge of a 5.56 blank firing conversion of M14s? I considered they may have been Mini 14s. The rifle squad was already assembled some distance away and I probably couldn't tell the difference from that far anyway. The honor guard platoon accompanying the caisson definitely had M14s.

My buddy is a 1LT in the Old Guard. I'll ask him.

See attached. I am not sure what to make of his reply...

WTF? "Gotten through?" So, clearly, the brass surviving family is given isn't vetted as being the actual brass fired. I'm very surprised honor guards don't take more care in ensuring that.

Thread resurrection for the latest quarantine project at Chez Nittany . . . 80 rounds of Garand food. Had a reloading kit and some components for awhile, but never buckled down until the Great Ammo Shortage of 2020. And then I had to find primers, ye gads. My first load is an attempt to stay close to M2 Ball specs for the Garand; 155 grain Sierra MatchKings on top of 47 grains of IMR4064. According to the Sierra manual, that's supposed to be ~2800fps, which is close to the old government spec.

I may do 16 more rounds (with Garands you have to think in octal). Next up on the list is whipping up rounds in both .308 and .223 for my ARs.
