Hello, this is my first post and I was looking for similar feedback, as far as any opinions on what my odds of getting selected for Naval OCS (Pilot) (I see that the boards are now rolling, good/bad thing?).

ASTB 6/6/6 58
Graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in December of 2012; Double Major in Finance (2.9 gpa) and Homeland Security (3.1 gpa)
Played high school baseball all 4 years in high school as well as 4 years of club baseball during my collegiate tenure
4 LOR's (1 Captain, 1 Commander, 2 Master Chiefs (both retired)
No criminal filings/no drug use/no debts
Currently in good health (but I guess I'll really find out when I go to MEPS here pretty soon)

Any insight is helpful, Thanks!

What about LOR's from your employers or professors? Those are what really carries weight.

That's the last piece to my puzzle, currently waiting for her to get one in, my only concern is that I know it's a busy time of the year for her. But if it does carry significant weight, I'm willing to delay the processing of my package.

First of all, we don't give odds or percentages for selection, check with your bookie.:p

Rolling boards are good, it means you probably don't have to wait as long for results; but it also means you should submit the best packet you can, as early as possible.

Y0ur GPA is borderline, can't fix that.
OAR is very good, but ASTB scores a bit low for aviation. If non-select first time, may want to retake to improve scores.

Hopefully your Officer & Chiefs LORs indicate that they actually are familiar with you & your leadership potential. A couple more would help, maybe from your HS/College Coaches, or perhaps Boy Scout leaders. Any other volunteer/leadership activities, or personal achievements are a plus and should be documented. Your baseball and any other team sports a plus.:)

Not a gypsy fortune teller, just my educated opinion, good luck!:D

My ASTB scores were the same thing. I have a bit higher of a GPA and in mechanical engineering. I somehow managed to avoid subs and was selected for pilot. Study hard, look on amazon, there are some good books and do it again! Good luck!

I agree with the above statements. Is re-taking your ASTB an option? A lot of people on this site talk about people with <3.0 GPAs getting picked up for having killer ASTB scores. If you could bump your scores up, it might help even out the playing field some. But as stated above, you'll never know until you try! Look around in some of the recent threads in the OCS section. A lot of us have been posting our stats and whether or not we got picked up and which communities we got picked up for. This thread in particular has the outcome of the most recent board:

I got an error trying to open up that link. Can you repost it please?

My NRD allows dual processing. You enlist but your OR needs to sign off on an Officer Referral form. That is where they would write dual processing, cannot ship until (enter date when they will know board results). If you are picked up for officer programs, it can void your enlisted contract and enter in your officer one. I would recommend enlisting. Your scores are not super competitive and unless you have some break out experiences, you most likely will not get selected.
Typical SWO selections have high OAR scores and Supply desires high gPAs and finance/business degrees

Look at enlisted jobs that are offering bonuses (information dominance fields). I have several people dual processing....

Winging it!!
I would not listen to the poster above me!

first things first, if you wanna be an officer, only apply to be an officer. Do not enlist if you want to be an officer!!!

Your ASTB is a little low pretty much average actually, re-take after your first board if your not picked up!

This dual processing thing sounds like you are committed to enlisting if you are not picked up which is a toss up with your scores. I'm not knocking being enlisted, my father was an ordnance men for 12 years and he is my hero, but one thing he has said is " If you have a degree, all you can do is apply and all they can say is no or yes, but if you do not apply the answer will always be no!"

Once again don't listen to the poster above me, Apply with your stats, then if your not picked up improve your stats and carry on!

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

My family is in a situation that I have to join the military for us to survive.
Maybe not the worst reason to join, but a close second. Becoming a Naval Officer is not/has never been a good "bail-out" plan…just my $.02.
I wasn't talking about completely enlisting...
Uh..what? Sheesh.

Keep your current job. Maybe get two or three. Have your family members get jobs, too. I dunno what else to say…if survival is on the line.

For the record I wouldn't completely discount the poster above you (DIVO) since he has 10 years in the Navy as an officer and currently serves as an OR. You on the other hand are currently a private pilot, a student and have 7 LORs........... Just saying

Robert, opinions are what one gets when asking for advice on AW. Your 'advice' (opinion), may turn out to be right or wrong, that's immaterial. But to recommend that an applicant "not listen" to another member's opinion (twice), is simply arrogant. It happens that poster is very experienced in the Navy (recruiting), and you aren't even in yet.

1. A bit of humility will serve you well here, and in the program.
2. Always do your homework.
3.. Use discretion when 'dissing' someone online, it can backfire.:(

A sincere Happy New Year!;)

yea, why listen to a successful OR?

first things first, if you wanna be an officer, only apply to be an officer. Do not enlist if you want to be an officer!!!

I agree, if you only want to be an officer don't enlist, but he was talking about needing to provide for his family, he may want to be an officer but if enlisting is needed to take care of family then he must do what he needs to do.

It is low, average would be a mix of 6 and 7's

This dual processing thing sounds like you are committed to enlisting if you are not picked up which is a toss up with your scores.

Yes he would be committing and it is not even a toss up, it is a remote chance with those scores.

Once again don't listen to the poster above me, Apply with your stats, then if your not picked up improve your stats and carry on!

His GPA isn't going to change, that is THE MAIN FACTOR for non aviation jobs, maybe if he gets a QUALIFYING PFAR score that would give him a new option.

BTW DIVO's comments referred to the OP as he asked about enlisting, just realized that post is over a year old and the OP hasn't been on the site for over a year as well.
