ACCP may not be necessary for all YGs or communities, but keeping things predictable is in BUPERS' best interest, lest people say "I can't count on the bonus? Screw it, I'm punching," resulting in another t-notch group.

fair enough, i suppose. but how many people make their decision to stay based largely on the bonus? That's one of the comical parts of the bonus - its really not anywhere close to being worth the commitment you incur for taking it. Not saying there aren't people who do, but just not sure how valid of a decision it is to stay because of it.

While not "worth the time".. I've done the following with my ACCP:

Check 1- Paid off Puma, Motorcycle and Truck
Check 2- Saved and used as down payment on house
Check 3- Used/using for closing costs, furniture (I had none), fixing up my rental house (I hope it's not too trashed when I get there tomorrow) and divorce related legal bills.
Check 4? Going to depend on if I make LCDR or not. If I get it, it's going to be split between house and investments.

While not the reason I'm here, it was nice to have to be able to do things. I would not have been able to buy a house on the beach without it.

^ not implying that there aren't intelligent and responsible things that one can do with the bonus money. I'm just suggesting that i doubt most people who choose to stay in after their initial obligation is up do it because of the bonus.

The bonus is an incentive, right now people don't need an incentive to stay in... the T-notch was created by a aviation selection shortfall from officer production sources mid-90s, there will be no such notch since there is nowhere else to go. The bonus now accomplishes nothing but smiles and propagation of feelings of entitlement to bonuses. The Navy isn't about smiles (not for me right now anyways, until they start giving out IA bonuses (besides the 1000 a month extra I get anyways)).

If you don't take the bonus but select for DH, are there benefits to be had? (IE, I have no service commitment so no thank you I am not interested in that post-DH GSA?)

That's about it - you can punch at your PRD for each subsequent duty station if you don't take the bonus.

Yep.. Even if the "Coolest Job in the World" landed in my lap, I could not punch unless I want to pay back a metric shit-ton of money.

Well, not until February anyways.

Got a brief today... The bonus is awaiting the budget...if it comes out (for the AC guys). The FTS is awaiting the budget, and if it comes out, the AC bonus. So basically, standby. Neither affects me, but thought I'd share.

Thanks for the heads up... checked the PERS site today; budget has been out for 3 weeks now and nothing updated there. I'm expecting the normal 3-month delay in gov't processing.

I am one of those pilots awaiting the message and have been asking around. My XO called to the PMA manager for ACCP and he said that the proposal to Washington was sent with no changes for pilots back in October. He expects that it should be coming out within a month of the FY11 budget being signed (April 15?). That would put us at next Friday. We'll see. Here we are nearly in the third quarter of FY11 and no message. What is interesting is the Chair Force already updated their bonus for pilots earlier this year.

CAG, who is buddies with an 0-6 detailer in Milton said that there will be a bonus, not sure how much, but the lawyers are writing up the contract. Like some one else mentioned, it is also suppose to be broken up by platform (VAQ, VP, VRC, etc..) and pilot/NFO. He also added that he did not know if it was going to be out by the ADHSB of 31MAY. If it comes out after that date, I think the NAVY is in for some serious manning problems for DH at least in my community. My detailer, I spoke to last week, seemed worried with the # of opt-in letters by saying that he doesn't understand why so many officers up for ADHSB were waiting on the message to opt-in.

Because like it or not, that extra $25k a year does do a lot to dull the pain of dealing with teh stupid.

(or you could be like me, get 4 or 5 of 6 checks and not have to do a DH tour)

Thanks for some intelligent insight.

Maybe this is just on the P-3/helo (pre-8 yr comittment) side, but wouldn't most of the guys up for DH screen this year have been eligible for the bonus last year? (Roughly, 1st look guys this year are YG-01, winged in 03, 7 yr comittment takes you to 10 and you can take it up to a year early...) (seems to me the math would fit the jet guys in too- most of the YG-01 guys I know were eligble for the bonus last year)
It just seems strange that there would be a significant number waiting to opt-in because of it.

Yeah, as a 7 year guy, I took the bonus in December 08, (1st check Jan 09) on the "year early, 6 payments total" plan.

I did not go up for LCDR until April 2010 after getting pulled up a YG.. I did go from Commission to Wings in 15 months though. I should have been on the ADHSB this year, but am sitting in limbo until I have my Above Zone screen.

I figured, with the abysmal DH screen rates, I'd probably bag a few years of the bonus, and not owe any more time. It was a no brainer for me, and immediately post divorce, when there were a lot of "eat or pay bills" months, it helped out a lot.

Well in my case I am a VFA YG01 guy with an 8 year commitment. This is the first year I can apply for ACCP. We'll see what happens. GLTA
