For all practical purposes, the internet on a carrier is worthless - bandwidth issues. You're effectively operating at dial-up speeds best case and nothing at all most of the time. You can certainly bring laptops - good for movies, gaming, porn, what have you, but you can't connect them to the ship's network. Laptops are good for port calls and there are usually plenty of WiFi internet cafes or hotels w/ WiFi.

In the last few years now there are a lot of low-bandwidth "mobil.*" websites which usually work OK with boat connectivity. I'll kinda miss the old days, when your bank website would time out while you were waiting for it to load along with those fancy java, flash, and superfluous 250k+ jpegs of yuppies drinking coffee and happily managing their finances...
And here we thought mail once every 3 weeks was a 'good deal' ... *sigh* ... you kids.

I would gladly take 28k compared to the regularly scheduled 0K of a FFG. I spent the day on a DDG (it was like going to town w/ Ma and Pa) and they had people using non-mobile versions of Facebook. It was like I was in the future.

3 weeks is still better than any experience I've had w/ Frigate independent steaming ops. Oh well, like everyone has said, that's why you have a laptop.
There was a post on baseops about flying in the AF and most didn't sound happy. What is your life once your home? Are you working 10 hour days doing paperwork?

It's certainly a possibility. Will it be everyday? Probably not, but it can be more than once a week, depending on your squadron manning and general ability to get things done.
Sometimes when going through 'workups' .... you'd find yourself NUKE loading most of the day -- flying a bombing hop late afternoon -- and after dinner, you'd come back and wave the rest of the guys at the field for night bounces.
12 hour days were not uncommon. During the 'heat' of workups (example above) --- 16+ hours for over a 3-4 week period was not uncommon. Repeat 2-3 times over the 6-8 month turnaround cycle and you've got the life of the ATTACK-driver. :sleep_125
Long days at sea are the norm. Heck, it's not like you can jump in your car and go grab a pizza somewhere. So you mind as well be working, or you'd be bored.
Shore duty can be different. There are still long days and dets. But I once had a department head come through the spaces and ask all the JOs what the hell they were still doing there? After we told him, he said, "anyone who can't get their day's work done by 1600 is inefficient!" Get the hell outa here!
Believe me, we suddenly became "extremely efficient" from that day on!!!! :icon_wink

Fly, Work-out, Eat, Sleep....repeat for 6 months interspersed with some attempts at collateral duties, and oh yeah...LIBERTY! Except, now things are so damned politically correct and no more P.I. Thank goodness I didn't miss the "old days" of Shit river, Magsaysay, VP Alley, Rufadora's, Lumpia, Marilyn's (with barking and yelping), Jeepnys, Trikes, San Miguel and...the Red Baron on Cubi Hill...Damned I miss all that stuff...Now, I just drone around in a SAAB 340 thinking about going to bed...
