So, do you like it? Flying in the military? What about living on a boat?

Not to mention the countless Novels, Feature Films, Coffee Table Books, etc. depicting the rich history of military aviation.

Yeah. From what I understand, even after retiring, fighter and attack pilots still get together periodically for volleyball where they take their shirts off and oil up their torsos.

Living on a boat can be the best or worst part of the Navy/Marines.

Air Force bases have great facilities, stores, coffeeshops, etc. They are also often located in East Kreblakistan or somewhere and don't move. Ships go to all sorts of places that most civilians, or even military from the other services, rarely get to go. "Filthy beggars, they go from port to port!"

The food is usually mediocre and the quarters are cramped, but it can get a little homey after a while. Your morning commute is the distance from your rack to your laptop. If you want to work out at 2am, the gym is 20m away. Plus, being that close to your coworkers does let you get to kow them a lot better, for well or ill.

I wasn't being an ass. Maybe he didn't know there was a USAF forum similar to ours where he can get these questions answered for him. By the context of his post I figured he made up his mind whether he wanted to go Navy or Air Force.

Ass or not, yes I have been around to baseops and have been lurking over there for quite some time gathering info. The air force seems pretty nice to me, but that's just me. The boat factor is the main thing that draws me away from the Navy. But, I know absolutely nothing about what its like to live on a boat. I just picture living in cramped quarters away from society or land with people I may or may not like. Again, I'm just afraid of going crazy. But, if people say they don't mind it then I guess I wouldn't either.

Living on a boat...

Living on a ship can suck for sure. The biggest benefit is probably the adventure, whatever that means. Port hopping and "seeing the world" is pretty cool too; you won't get that in the AF.

That said, the AF has great facilities. They may be out in the middle of nowhere though...

Also note, the Navy has quite a few pilots who will never set foot on a ship...P-3s, E-6s, and expeditionary (non-ship going) squadrons.

Of course 'we' like it, you young fool (said w/ all kinder, gentler emotional input) .... otherwise, why WOULD 'we' do it ???

The flyin' is 'da best ... the livin' accomodations ... they're do-able.

It's the Navy so there's a possiblity of being on a boat thus if you don't want to be on a boat, don't join the Navy!!

details on living quarters at sea

For those that have served recent sea tours, can you please describe in detail about living quarters for officers on carriers and other ships?

for example...

Room lay outs
How many beds per room
Bathroom quarters

Also,

Can you bring laptops aboard? If so, is there internet access on board for personal use?

Thanks!

Rooms are assignments are based on seniority. As an Ensign, expect to be in an eight bunk JO "junk room" with two sinks. As a senior LT, you'll be breaking into the domain of the 2 person rooms. In all cases, you'll get an integrated desk and chest of drawers. There are a smattering of 4 and 6 person rooms as well. Navy ships don't have bathrooms, but they have "Heads". They are somewhat communal. Have to be at least an O-5 CO/XO to break into the rooms with a shared head.
