Getting married POST OCS

I'm not giving advice either way here, but I got married a week after commissioning and a week before reporting to NASP. It was perfect in that I was able to be home for a week and spend some time with friends/family and then take a full week long honeymoon before heading to Pcola. When I commissioned we had 3 weeks to report to Pcola (you use leave, but at least you are allowed to take it). Yes, it worked out very well for us, but the stress of not rolling or getting held up in OCS was always there. Also, keep in mind that you will not be there to help her (if you wanted to) when she is doing a lot of the planning, and the only contact you will have will be limited phone calls (1 or 2) throughout the week at OCS. It is very possible to plan a wedding in advance and have it work out, but I would suggest getting you're OCS date first before scheduling anything or sending out those "save the date" cards. And, when you do get your OCS date give yourself around 3 weeks buffer afterwards just in case you decide you like it in Newport and want to stay a little longer. Having said all that, having my wife here has been great, and I wouldn't change anything about how we planned our wedding/honeymoon. PM me if you want some more info. Good luck.

Also something to think about (if it hasn't been suggested) is doing a private JOP wedding right before you leave for OCS. That way you'll bank BAH and BAS while you're at OCS, which is an extra 1400$ or so for 3 months. A couple of my friends did that and they didn't announce it to anybody, and when they got home they had the ceremony and the whole bit and nobody knew the wiser. Just saying... it's a way to make a little more wedding funds before you leave.

True enough I imagine. It seems everything I have been told by the recruiters has been utter bull considering the amount they are spitting out. But, I do appreciate the bluntness of this forum. Rather know what to expect or not to expect now than find it out first hand. Thanks.

If the recruiters ran the Navy things would go exactly as they say. My OR put it perfectly one day when he said "the Navy officer program sells itself." There is no need for an OR to make bogus promises to get their numbers up.

Unfortunately they are at the mercy of big Navy.

I'm sure they have the best intentions for you, and despite the fact that they are not always 100% on target with what they say actually becoming reality it is unlikely that they are feeding you lies on purpose. I think I speak for everyone here when I say that my OR and the civilian processor have been a pretty straight shooters, but nobody is clairvoyant.

Can we see the question now, please?

oh the curiosity ...

Just what happened to make him so salty when it comes to marriage. I will be in the same boat soon so it is good to hear some horror stories to clear my rose colored glasses...

Brett has seen the chaos wracked upon people he knows by marriage/manatees/whidbey whales/divorce and such.

You don't have to get shot to know it hurts and is generally to be avoided.

Wow - what is a whidbey whale? Is there a more concise definition for a manatee other than a wife that devours pies every third week of the month? Sorry I am a newbie.

well for starters, if the waist and hips are both bigger than her chest, you are on the road to manateeism.

I think Manatee is roughly defined as follows:
1-A fat, female, semi aquatic mammal deemed worthy of special financial protection by the state of Florida. Manatees are known to frequent SNA hangouts and disguise themselves as attractive human females, but after being fed a magic substance known as "wedding cake" they double their body weight in a surprisingly short time and reveal their true form. Known foods include Ice Cream, Fast Food, Fried Food, Pies and Snackycakes. Do not attempt to force a Manatee to diet or exercise as that is in violation of the endagered species act, and they may turn violent if either is even mentioned.

Hi Jason,

My two cents, I can tell you the pros and cons of what my now husband and I did. We were engaged prior to him leaving for OCS but we decided to wait to get married until he finished primary. We also were told about the two weddings idea with a justice of the peace and a family one later. We (or I :D) really wanted the first one to be the "real" one so we waited until we could have the big family one. I regret that now. We basically just threw away all that money that we could have been making had we been married, that could have gone to paying for the big wedding. Also, have you two ever been away from each other for a considerable amount of time before? If you wait until after OCS and API it is a good test as to how the rest of your Military career will be. There is usually a wait between Primary and Advanced so we did it then. He didn't even have to take leave because he was able to OHARP during that time. We didn't have time to take a honeymoon after the wedding (Hawaii after Advanced) but I think that's better because you can have time to unwind after the wedding chaos and have something to look foreward to! I did as much planning as possible prior without knowing the date. Then when you can set a firm date it comes really fast! Downside to that, only half of the people we invited were able to come on such short notice. Upside, cost of the wedding was way less! Okay, reread what I wrote and hope my rambling makes sense! :D Good luck with whatever you two decide to do!

Master- ROTFL and what the heck is a snackycake?!
