Ammo, Ammo, Ammo

I think it has something to do with the 'just-in-time logistics' system not being able to keep up with spikes in demand. Every hour a box of ammo sits on the shelf, the company is essentially losing money on it, so they aspire to minimize the turnover time with new stock arriving just in time. Plus, I'm betting that ammo is pretty far down the priority list with respect to moneymaking as far as Walmart is concerned. They simply do too much business in other product areas for it to count much.

Which isn't to say that the Walmart logistical system isn't impressive. It's exactly the opposite. But if the system has to choose between item A, which sells at price B and rate C, and item X, which sells at price 3B and rate 5C, it's going to pick the latter.

Edit: Well, that, and the overall spike in demand, lull in supply as component prices, go up, etc.

All makes complete sense, intellectually. But it's funny how the St. Pete Walmart "always" seems to have it and the Jax store (or at least mine) doesn't.

At least the Walmart near you has ammo. The one here at Airport Place / whatever the Hell this new shit near my house is called, does not have ammo or guns.

There is a Gander Mountain there, but I've only been to wally world and Lowes.

Lowes has ammo?

The Gander Mountain definitely has more ammo in stock. And with the increase in available ammo, you will have the privilege of an increase in price. Basically, it's a rip-off.

You could always go the roll your own route and start reloading. It saves you money, is cathartic, and will pay for itself in the near, vice long, term.

I like these: www.dillonprecision.com But admittedly, I don't reload much. I have the skill set (at least the fundamentals), but usually just barter homebrew for ammo with a friend locally. I don't know WTF I'm going to do if I take a job somewhere else.

Gator,

I meant I have been living in Lowes for the last week. Half the staff knows me by name at this point.

I had to go to the wally world for socks and underware since o was not planning on being here a week plus.

In due time, but for now, I have neither the time nor short-term "ability" to get into reloading. If I move back to FL when I retire, I can see myself getting sucked in, big time, though.

Gator,

I know. It was a joke.

Not bad at all, considering the average prices for it these days. I, or rather my rifles, prefer the 62gr stuff anyway.

Edit: Never mind.

A while ago, the CMP was selling off a shitload of .30-06 AP rounds they had acquired. A guy at the local range was seating the action of a new Garand build, and let a friend and I put some of that stuff downrange. Great shooting ammo, but corrosive.

Sapper!

Excuse the BS...

Have to say i've never seen an AP 30-06

Yeah good point, AP is definitely corrosive. Not so sure I'd put that stuff through my old rifle. I always take to cleaning the barrel with a healthy dose of copper fouling cleaner and that seems to do it, but yeah probably not good to recommend to other shooters then I guess. So hard to pass up that good of deal, getting ammo that cheap is ridiculous. Have to say my last box grouped pretty well too, I never got out past 200 yards so maybe its not much of a point to make.

There's a ton of MILSURP ammo out there that's corrosive, not just the AP stuff. As long as you know what you're doing and actually clean your guns after shooting, you'll be fine with it. The problem comes in when people shoot a bunch of corrosive shit, put their guns away, and wonder why everything is fucked up a month later when they take them out again.

The MILSUP AP stuff grouped like mad out of the guy's admittedly very well put together Garand, but I'd heard that it was nearly all snatched up as soon as it became available.

(Note: I used the timeframe of a month not as a specific time for corrosive ammo to mess up a gun, and only because it was the period of time that first came to mind while I was typing. I've never tested how long it will take for corrosive powder residue to mess up one of my guns, because the very few times I've shot the stuff through any of my or anyone else's guns, I have cleaned, offered to clean, or watched the owner clean them within a couple hours of doing so. So don't come looking for me when you shoot some nasty stuff through your boomstick and wait 'only' a week to clean it, and it's f-ed up.)

Ammo??? Never enough, ammo hoarding whore here BUT I use it at a high rate. Last week local Wally's World had maybe 10 boxes of the Federal 325 count .22 LR in stock.... something like 18 bucks a box. Not the greatest BUT I like it and it feeds in all my .22's. TWO different employee's said none in stock but I insisted I want as much as allowed and it IS on the shelf. The tattooed lady that looked like a 70 year old 3rd class bosun rang up my 3 boxes and mumbled it must have just came in. Gleefully I ran it out to the truck and tracked down my other half that was looking at stupid stuff like frozen broccoli or yogurt. Sent her over there NOW only to run into the same 70 year old 3rd class bosun looking massive tattooed comic book. Same song... ain't got none. Needless to say I got my full allotment and I have no doubt employee's are buying it up and flipping it for a few buck extra.
5 days later........ 1 down, 5 boxes to go from that batch. None in stock last night.
Should Trump trash the election and Hitlery gets in we're ALL fucked, ammo will be just a fond memory for all of us.

Remediating the effects of corrosive ammo is trivial - a little water flush down the barrel and action with a lab squeeze bottle and dry. Takes 2 minutes..
