Stupid bag / nomex jacket question:

Every officer I've seen in a flight suit has worn rank insignia on the shoulder. Normal. Now, does this apply to the nomex jacket as well? I think I've accidentally blown off a few officers who lacked the shoulder insignia. Is shoulder rank insignia usually worn on the nomex jacket or is it a matter of personal preference?

Tip: check the insignia on their cover :)

Or if on the flight line, just say hello anyways

No rank on the Nomex jacket. I think the AF does that, but the Navy/MC/CG team does not.

As for OSC...lame. If I was ever "lucky" enough to arrive first, I would have welcomed help, not argue about it. With one crappy radio and one SAR radio, having a low boy/high boy is a good way to hold off the insanity and make a timely recovery. Plus, I just always wanted to initiate my own personal TFR. I thought that would be cool.

Truth. I didn't even think about that. I guess I'm just used to always checking collars and shoulders for it.

And if you're facing their wrong side to get a shot at their rank and your vision sucks too much like mine does to read a nametag, use the following:

If in the TRACOM, they have wings (AVIATOR, not aircrew ;)), and look older than 25 (otherwise could be a recent winger), then just throw it up. I'd rather embarass myself for saluting a JG or 1stLT (hey, they're still 1 above!) than walking by an O-3/4 with a "hello".

Also, 90% of the time, if they have wings and weathered brown boots, you can rest assured they're an IP.

But that is 3 paragraphs on recognizing an IP to salute. I think at this point we're (I'm) nuking it.

This comes from another forum and has them stumped.

Can an aircraft launch from an aircraft carrier with 0 knots over the deck?

I know it depends on the type of aircraft, fuel on board, ect..., is there any scenario where it is possible?

Yes.........it depends on the type of aircraft, fuel on board, etc.......

In other words, you answered your own question.

A quick question for the Harrier guys, what boat training do you guys undergo? Do you do a full carrier qual syllabus or do you do your own thing?

:(

The S-3 could launch with zero and land with a tail wind... Done both and didn't much like it!

But that doesn't really matter anymore...

There's a difference between "possible" and "advisable". As mentioned, the Hoover guys could do it. One launched from a boat at anchor in San Diego a few years back. Every other fixed-wing on the boat, a nice healthy headwind was needed for a NATOPS-legal launch, especially if you wanted to go flying with any kind of useful load (gas, ordy) on board.

Is it posible for some of those to launch with no headwind? Maybe, in a Pax River, aero-geek sense. IOW, it's academic, ain't never going to happen for-real.
