Military Aviation Major

I'm thinking of transfering next year to Liberty University in VA. They have a Military Aviation major I'm considering pursuing. Has anyone had experiance with this major before? If so is it worth pursuing?

Also, do you think that it could help my chances of getting jets assuming I make it to p-cola?

Thanks for the insight.

I don't know what a Military Aviation major does. I am generally very skeptical of pilots getting aviation majors in general. After all, you will get out at some point, and all you'll be able to say is, "Well, I know a lot about flying."

For the second point, I think I'll get about 99% agreement from the other pilots on the fact that it will definitely NOT help you get jets.

Seriously, major in what you enjoy, especially if you can get some sort of aviation contract where your major doesn't play a factor. I'd say it's more important to do well in major you enjoy vs. pursuing one that may "help" you career-wise.

No, it wont help you get jets, but please enlighten us on what the major entails.

The only things that will affect your chances of getting jets are your grades and the needs of the Corps when you select.

That being said, choose your major based on if you'll enjoy it and you can do reasonably well at it. Not whether or not you think it'll help you get jets.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The US Navy flight syllabus is designed to take the guy who doesn't know his ass from the front end of an airplane and give him the knowledge to fly a military aircraft according to the given mission.

There are pilots in the Navy/USMC/USAF/USCG/Civilian World with almost every imaginable degree.

I know guys with journalism to mech and aero engineering to music majors. The only time a major would help is in understanding some concepts but even then it's minor. Everything is so simplified that it's not a problem. Like everyone else said, pick what you want, not what you think will get you jets because in the end you might not even want jets. I'm only half way through primary, but there's been a lot of guys who where pretty serious about tailhook and now want helos for whatever reason. I'm still faithful to tailhook though, but it's a lot of work.

On a slightly different note. I did my IFS at the Liberty U aviation program. The head of the aviation department is a retired Navy CAPT, helo pilot and a real nice guy. He was defiantly working on building the program and had the backing of the school. Realize that if you go there you will get sucked into the whole Jerry Falwell crowd. Students there are not allowed to drink regardless of age. Cohabitation is a big no no. Etc.

I have no idea what the major entails lol. I was just looking into transfering and I was thinking about checking out the school my brother is probably going to next year. The major just poped out at me as something that might help me learn stuff early and give me a headstart at flight school and help me get better grades. That's what I meant by "help me get jets"

Wow. Sounds like they are really training aviators to be an asset to a ready room. Or at least an easy target for weekend duty. Which I guess IS an asset, in reality.

Wait...no no...I just did a mental calculation, and the tool-to-avoiding duty factor still weighs more heavily on the tool side. Not an asset afterall. Oops!

You can read "The Liberty Way" for yourselves. There are some great things in there:

Attendance at a dance net you 6 Reprimands and $25.00 fine
Viewing an R Rated movie or entering the residence hallway of the opposite sex get you 12 Reprimands and a $50.00 fine
Commission of a Misdemeanor or going into the off campus bedroom of someone of the opposite sex will earn you 18 Reprimands, a $250 fine and 18 Hours of Disciplinary Community Service
Commission of a Felony, drinking alcohol, spending the night with a person of the opposite sex, or (my favorite) involvement in witchcraft will give you 30 Reprimands, a $500 fine, 30 hours Disciplinary Community Service and possible expulsion.

Yes, spending a night with a person of the opposite sex is on the order of a Felony

The list goes on

Man, don't put up with all the crap Hokie mentioned. After spending your summers in Quantico you are going to want to go back to college and have fun, and that should involve booze and the opposite sex (hold off on the witchcraft). If you find a few classes in that major that sound cool, take them. Doesn't mean you have to change your major.

Listen to phrog, don't limit yourself with such a specific major. I am fairly confident that everything you need to get jet grades can be acquired via Navy/Marine Corps training. Now actually getting jets depends on the stars aligning and butterflys farting in China etc etc ... I didn't "get jets" but I got the grades, and thats all you can control. Good luck bruddah.

That Liberty U Code of Conduct thing put me over the edge! I may have to change my object of disgust from fanatical terrorists to Liberty U.

The fact that such a place exists is cause for me to worry. Seriously.

In Liberty's defense it is a Christian school, and I am a Christian. I'd be fine with sticking to the rules as they (mostly) line up with my morals anyway.

Thank you all for your input, I'm going down there on Friday to find out more about it. I'll post an update after I figure out just what they would teach me.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University also has a military aviation major which they call "Aeronautical Sciences Major with Military Pilot Specialty". But even the NROTC Commander of Embry-Riddle has said this is NOT the right degree if you want to go SNA- the right degree according to him is "Aerospace Engineering" or something similar.
