Help with understanding PLC application process

I am currently applying for the program and I was wondering if having 3 traffic violations would have any serious affect on my application.

I'm pretty sure everybody has traffic violations!! I have had numerous (damned lead foot) and my OSO never even blinked an eye at it so apparently it's not a big deal. If you can smoke weed and become an officer then I would like to think that speeding tickets would be ok. haha

Rank and becoming a USMC Pilot

I tried using the search function and couldn't find the answer to my question, so sorry if this has been discussed before. I am currently applying for OCS and I plan on attending the PLC 2nd Inc. next summer. As of right now I am applying for an air contract. I would love to fly, but at the same time, something deep down is telling me to go ground also. If I did ground, I would shoot to be at the top 10% of my TBS class and try and get Ground Intel or Infantry. So right now, I am pretty much torn right down the middle. I found myself wondering, maybe I could do one, and then once my initial contract is up I can apply for the other. I asked around and found out that if I were to earn my wings and fly first, I would be too high in rank once my contract was up to try and get Ground Intel or Infantry and hope to get out in the field. So then I thought that maybe I could go in with a ground contract, serve out my six years, and then apply for flight school. So my question is, with the rank of Captain, or whatever it would be after the initial six years, would I have a shot at still earning my wings and flying for the Corps? And would it be a reasonable and possible goal? I would like to make a career out of this and was just wondering about the possibilities of getting to enjoy the best of both worlds. Sorry for the long build up to a short question, I just wanted to make my idea clear. Thank you guys in advance for any responses or advice.

Yes you can apply for aviation as a Capt. There is one at my old primary squadron right now workin on his wings - he's a former AMO.

IMHO, you should shoot for the contract now. Jump through all of the hoops now while you're young and have the hopefully medically qualified body to do so. My reasoning is if you get a contract, you will go to TBS with it, get knee deep in the ground shit and really have the opportunity to decide if the grunt thing is really for you. There will come a time during TBS where they will ask if any of the air contracts want to drop their contract and go ground. It will be here where you will be set up for either. Because the reverse situation is you show up to TBS as a ground contract, find out that the grunt thing is not for you and now you have to compete for the 1 or so air contracts offered for the company - stiff competition BTW, only 2 were given in my company out of the 20 or so that applied.

There will be plenty of opportunities down the road - after your wings - to get some with the ground pounders; I'm going to try for a FAC or BN Air officer tour after my first fleet tour.

BTW, being a Marine, you will always have the grunt moto juice running through your veins there's no shaking it.

yes, you can lat move from a ground mos to aviation via the Field Accession Board. i did it from ground intel on the '05 board. however, it is a competitive board and i would encourage you to pursue an aviation contract early (before you commission), assuming you're eligible and have a desire to fly, instead of getting one mos and then trying to switch to another. there are many opportunities to serve on the ground once you have your wings. there are very few opportunities to fly once you have a ground mos. google "MCO 1542.1H" for the details. either way, go for what you want. pm if you have questions.

Don't do it!! Trying to go from Ground to Air once you get to the fleet is twice as hard. Take the Air Contract you get and RUN with it.
Good luck

You can't be both spiderman and aquaman. Pick one thing and persue it to the best of your ability. Don't do one thing with the plan of dumping it later and doing the other. Changing MOSs late is possible, but is nothing to count on, i.e. it's by no means guaranteed, so you'd better be happy with what you're already doing. Plus, as a guy who says he wants a career, lat moves put you behind your peers in the new MOS. It's not unrecoverable, but you will be struggling to catch up.

With the whole career progression thing in mind, what do the monitors do to help the late bloomers out? Do they give them 2 back-to-back tours to gain proficiency or just let them follow the normal B-billet cycle as everyone else?

Maybe this is semi-unrelated, but it might help your thought process out.

You are going to do a tour as a Platoon Commander and then you are going to be putting the office into the word officer. So don't get too wrapped around the handle about the high-speed MOS, because promoting Marines and writing fitreps and counselling your felony PFC's is the same no matter what the job field is.

Also, ground-intel turns into MAGTF intel officer (along with all the other 02xx) MOS's, so something to consider.

Get the flight contract.

I've said it before, although this time it is about a Marine career instead of Navy. Stop trying to be EVERY member of the A-Team. You aren't 5 years old anymore. Pick a career path and GO with it. You can't be a policeman, Fireman, superhero AND astronaut. You're going to have to grow up and choose a path for yourself.

Wait, you mean I won't be able to roll up in civvies with long hair and a beard and tell my CO "John has a long mustache; I say again: John has a long mustache." :D

You CAN'T be a pilot first and then go back in infantry.... you'll be WAY to senior. The ONLY way to go from aviation to infantry/ground intel is to fail out of flight school early..... like in API.

hah, the "shoe phone guy" speech crushed the dreams of half my platoon. They were walking away from the first MOS brief like the CO had just pissed in their Cheerios.

I had to convince a guy that all was not lost and that he would be able to scrape some meager amount of enjoyment out of the rest of his life.

Same thing happened with my platoon. You would have thought the CO singlehandedly crushed the hopes and dreams of every 2nd Lt in the room.

Though there were some guys who seriously thought that they could go fly, then drive tanks and be an intel or grunt type guy... It's amazing where some people get these ideas!

Though there is one guy who is an O-3 going through IOC right now. He was a reserve comm guy who ended up doing the provisional rifle platoon commander gig with both a rifle and weapons plt, so he's going to IOC so he can be a rifle company CO...

"Shoe phone brief?" I assume that's about how 02XXs aren't really spies.
