I know that AW SOP says no politics but I think that this may be of interest to you guys. Please remove this post if my soap-boxing crosses the line.
Section 2714 of H.R. 3590, which was the healthcare reform bill signed into law by President Obama, mandated the extension of health insurance benefits to unmarried dependents under the age of 26 not currently insured by their employers. Since Tricare is funded by the Department of Defense this extension of benefits does not apply to dependents of military members covered by Tricare. Although I personally do not agree with the healthcare reform law in its entirety I believe that the provisions of the law should be applied to all Americans including military dependents. Recognizing the shortcomings of the healthcare reform law Senator Mark Udall (D-CO) and Representative Martin Heinrich (D-NM) introduced legislation, S.3201 and H.R. 4923 respectively, which would extend Tricare coverage of dependents of active duty and retired military members from age 23 to age 26. Both bills seemed to be stalled in committee and I would encourage anyone in support of this legislation to write their congressmen.
