Cool clip Heyjoe. I especially like the part at 1:40 where the shot was taken out of the back of a COD. :)

My favorite head-on shot taken from COD ramp in 1983 in the IO. Took endless weeks to convince CAG to let us do it.

How come those guys have different helmets? Which one is cooler?

Brett

Neither is cool... they both suck!!! They were only doofus stuntmen actors who robbed some hollywood wardrobe.

This is what the real thing wore.....

That looks pretty tight, I think I may start blousing my flight suit as well.;)

You've obviously never had to correct a flight doc on how to wear a flight suit. I thought they learned that at API, but this one had her zoom bag bloused...wtf over?!

I always understood that to be Heater's shot. Was he in the COD or did someone else take it and allowed him to put it in his book? Growing up, I had this poster hanging in my room. It's probably still in a closet somewhere here. Very cool pic.

Not in his book and if you had the poster, it was from the VF-102 Coffee Mess working with a local postcard guru to get it on the market. It's a VF-102 Diamondback off USS America. Heater is very picky about photography and only showcases his own work. He was in my office a few years ago and asked why I had a shot of a VF-2 Tomcat by Tumor Twomey on my wall. Answer: "Because I liked it and he gave it to me". His answer "i only put my own work on my walls and in my books". To each his own. I have written a few books but I own several thousand books. I treat photography the same way. I admire other people's efforts who inspire mine. To me, artwork, photography, writing, editing and other forms of design are all creative outlets.

Huh, I could have sworn that was in there. I'll have to break out that book and look through it just for old time's sake.

Actually, now that you mention it, I noticed the Diamondback markings. I think I was confusing myself between Heater (whom I've never met) and "Boomer" Stufflebeem, whose family was a friend of my family and gave me some great tours while I was growing up. Both were a big inspiration as a youngin'.

"Boomer" is not a shooter. In fact, I was in Pentagon when he called and asked me to come down and do a photoshoot when he was CO of VF-84. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find that he scheduled a 4 ship and it was up to me what we did. My Avatar is one of the shots from that shoot. His other request was to get a magazine cover, preferrably AvWeek. I had a pretty good relationship with several editors there from my Approach days and was able to deliver on that.

Another shot from the AvWeek Photo Shoot.

Each jet was in a different mission configuration (Fleet Air Defense, TARPS and Air-to-Ground).

Here's another quick video featuring the cockpit view.

For those into the Hornet, here's pretty decently edited cockpit video (notice he launches with a Heater on the starboard wingtip, but it disappears later).
