Navy joins the pack and adopts Digital Camouflage

i think its because when you go on a Navy base you see like several different uniforms at once. For instance, if you were to go to Quantico you see 95% of the Marine's in digis.

if you go to a Navy base you see people in khakis, whites, winter blues, the new enlisted uniform etc. Just the other day at the hospital all three corpsman at the front desk had on a different uniform.

i agree in principle why they are doing this, but I think their could have been a simpler solution.

perhaps I am wrong in my analysis, but i feel like i got the jist of it.

Well, if/when the service dress khaki rolls out you'll still need the wash khaki shirts anyways, not CNT.

No, that's not really true.

CommodoreMid:

Don't worry about buying them now. You won't be in a situation where you'll need wash khakis for a while. Worry about it then, if it ever comes. I've only had to wear them once, and that was on a small boy. As a NFO, your chances may be even lower.

I find it funny that the many speaking to the usefulness of this uniform have: a. never worn the utilities, or b. have never worn the wash khaki's.

Try looking at it from the other side. First, utilities are even less likely to be seen if you're in an overboard situation, trust me, it's a very hopeless feeling when you and your shipmates are on the rails looking for someone who has fallen overboard. Second, woodland cammies are not going to hide gray paint at all, so those are a no go for someone painting. Third, the utilities are just plain crappy. Take off the name tapes, and slap on jiffy lube, there is zero difference. Remember people, these uniforms are not just for you, I would have much preferred to wear the cammies coming out than the utilities that we've had since '99. Those things just plain sucked ass. Xmid, way to belittle a rate that you will depend on some day. See how that works for you in the future . . .

My intent was not to belittle YN's or any rate for that matter. I have already been very thankful to have hard working YN's that were willing to go above and beyond to resolve issues. However many kids join the Navy with images of SEAL's coming out of the water and Hornets trapping on carriers with Godsmack blaring over the 1mc, but then the reality sets in that the Navy is made of many different pieces that are all necessary. Some are more glamorous and exciting than others, but all of them are necessary. My point is that maybe the camies are to remind that YN (just an example) sitting there in that cubicle that he is in a military that is at war, and that is something he/she can take pride in. Maybe they can hear that Godsmack a in their head everyonce in a while and remember what made them walk in that recruiters office. But those colors just look like something out of an old rap video...

I'm not sure if cammies are the best way to do that, but hey what the hell do I know I'm an Ensign. Some of the other reasons already noted in the previous thread are pretty good too. And for what its worth I like the cammies a lot more than those fugly new enlisted khakis. Now those look rediculous...

Can you elaborate on this a bit? Somebody on SailorBob was saying that one of his superiors wears SDKs regularly and that they're just wearing wash khaki shirts beneath the jacket.

You know, YNs don't just sit in a cubicle all day and alphabetize shit... My dad was a YN for 24-years and was both SW and AW qualified.

You guys are reading way too much in to it. It has nothing to do with YNs. There are going to be parts of just about every rate or designator where you could feel far from the battle front. I'm sure theres YNs walking around in the dessert carrying a rifle that are 10 times the man I am, but for those guys of any rate/designator that feel far from the battlefront the cammies could be a way to relate and feel pride in their service.

Aviators in a non-flying tour wear brown shoes and wear their leather jackets. Some are even allowed to wear their flight suits at given times. It can be a moral thing. How many guys/girls were stoked in API to put on a flight suit because it made them feel "cool", even though we were primarily sitting in a classroom all day?...

Hey, I'll belittle the fucking YN's, PN's, and PS's all I want...I never get worse treatment from anyone in the military than when I have to deal with Admin or PSD...Especially when I was a junior enlisted.

I had to make 7...7...trips to PSD to get my DLA/Travel advance from Pensacola to Vance AFB...thank God it wasn't my first move and I knew what I was doing...I would have NEVER gotten the money if I didn't put the screws to those shitheels.

The only way I got my move worked out from Pensacola to Jacksonville as AWAN Pickle was to bribe a fucking civilian in the PSD shop with a University of Iowa T-Shirt from home... These guys get the bad reputation by years of not giving a shit and mishandling of your paperwork/pay/orders/travel claims/awards/etc...and you can bet THEIR shit ain't screwed up...

So I will continue to have disdain for those rates (whichever are left, I've lost track) and continue to do most of the legwork myself on anything important.

There are always good guys in any rate, including the Personnel/Admin types...but you find more honest/hard working folk on the flightline than you do in the cubicle/desk any day...

^Wow....from the top rope!

In all fairness to the Yeoman...most that I've had have been outstanding. I think the whole mandatory Gov't travel card and the DTS system has been a real goat rope....I had never heard of so many problems until these 2 things were implemented a few years back.

Minor threadjack for advice: the sad truth I learned on my boat tour was never deal with them from the customer service window when you are helping one of your guys get their pay fixed. Plant your obstinate ass in their office and grind their entire department to a halt until they help. Unless you are a CDO, in which case you can really brutalize them into usefulness.

You're not required to wear SDKs, and therefore not required to own a set of long sleeve wash khakis. Also, there's two kinds of wash khakis, short and long-sleeved. So you don't have to have the long-sleeved khakis. Lastly, for a JO in aviation and TRACOM (and not SWOdom), which is where CommodoreMid is, there's no need to wear anything other than CNT/Polys, a flight suit, and maybe whites/blues once.

Muchas gracias. I know there is the whole thing that it's a "prescribable" uniform and technically we are supposed to have it (like winter blues, etc), but I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be screwing myself in the near future if I didn't buy it.

That's where I saw it. They obviously have a bigger stake in this than aviators do. This leads me to another question; how many (winged) aviators here are maintaining sets of wash khakis since this is what the blue cammies are replacing? I don't feel like dropping a couple hundred bucks on these if I don't need to do so.

Everyone will be required to get a pair, just like the PT uniform. Sooner or later you will have to buy a pair but I would hold off for now, it might be a while before you get to a command that has a 'digi cammie day'.
