The Eyes have it - All things Vision-related

Your command doesn't need to sign off, no trying to get officer evaluations, etc..... I have seen applications put together in a few hours by civilian applicants.
That makes a lot of sense. I will read up on requirements for coming back in, or reach out to a recruiter for a turnaround for coming back in.
Thank you for your advice.

Hi everyone,

I’m an AD USCG E-5 applying to USN SNA (I-SEL) with an approved conditional release. I also already have an approved Class 1 physical in AERO with no waivers required.

My recruiter sent me to MEPS on May 19th. On the 20th, I received a very surprising letter from N3M that I failed the Depth Perception at MEPS (50 arc seconds, tired and rushed) and was DQ’d for Pilot but qualified for all other designators including NFO.

I only want Pilot, so on the 21st, I went to the Navy Clinic near my unit to retest for depth perception and passed (30 arc seconds). I pulled the official results for this passing exam from MHS Genesis and sent it to my recruiter to forward for reconsideration from N3M.

Does anyone updated info of whether this is something N3M will usually grant PQ letters for after already issuing a DQ letter from the MEPS results?

I would love to just wait and see, but my EOAS is approaching fast and me and my family really counting on this I-SEL process. Just want to know what to expect so we can plan accordingly.

Thank you all!

Things like this have been overturned, how long it can take can vary. When you say your EAOS is fast approaching how much time do you have? Did you look to see when people are getting OCS dates?

Thanks for the reply! I have looked and for ISEL, it seems like they’re getting OCS dates that are a month or two out from when they get approved (if that’s what you mean).

My EAOS is in less than 4 months, but since I’m in a E-4 billet (just made E-5 in Jan), if I wanted to extend/reenlist until I get accepted, they’d make me PCS transfer which would incur even more obligated service minimums.

I was banking on the idea that I wouldn’t need waivers, or so I thought, in which case, I could hear back with a class date within the next few weeks ideally for the Aug/Sep OCS classes! Looks like I won’t be able to submit my package unless N3M changes their mind though.

I would look again at when ISEL are getting OCS dates they are several months out now.

If anyone went to MEPS, got DQ'd for vision and returned 6 months after getting PRK/LASIK/etc, did you have to redo all of MEPS or only the vision portion, or did you just submit your pre/post op paperwork and that was it. Trying to avoid having to go through all of MEPS again if I can.

You just resubmit the paperwork. MEPS' part is already finished and in their lens, you are "qualified" to join the military.

My vision is 20/40 in both eyes; correctable to 20/20. Is it as simple as getting glasses or do I need surgery? How does it work as an SNA? I know the vision requirement for SNA is 20/40 uncorrectable but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

20/40 is max …there are other gotchas like astigmatism….read the SNA physical qualifications requirements from NOMI.

My myopia, astigmatism, and uncorrected vision standards are outside the limits for SNA. I meet all vision requirements for NFO.

I went to MEPS and my recruiter says they've medically cleared me to apply for a pilot slot. I tried telling my recruiter I wouldn't meet the vision standards because I read the NAMI guide, and they still are allowing me to apply as SNA. Was a mistake made? Am i gonna get whammied out of SNA 100%?

What're the chances I'd get redesignated to NFO instead of SWO?

If I went to OCS I'd probably be the only guy knowing I'd get redesignated..

Hi,

There was a Navy Captain who did my physical at MEPS. He commented that my uncorrected vision was poor, and that I was ineligible for SNA specifically. He asked me to tell my recruiter and double check the requirements since it's been a while since he's looked at them and sent me off.

I then went to the Ophthalmology guide from NAMI on med.navy.mil and it says for SNA I must be no more than -1.5 for myopia power, astigmatism more than 1.0, and uncorrected better than 20/40.

This is when I told the recruiter I dont meet these standards, (and at this time MEPS was processing my application due to a couple waivers I was asked to submit). A week later, I was told good news that I've been medically cleared to apply for SNA. So it looks like I was cleared on the basis of those waivers, but they were not for anything ophthalmology related.
