Yes. But when there's a long wait to start schooling (like NIFE or primary), there's no harm in going med down.

Even if you were to get surgery today you would not be able to apply before you got out due to the 6-month wait however you can apply after you are out, you would have less hoops to jump through doing it that way.

Your command doesn't need to sign off, no trying to get officer evaluations, etc..... I have seen applications put together in a few hours by civilian applicants.

That makes a lot of sense. I will read up on requirements for coming back in, or reach out to a recruiter for a turnaround for coming back in.
