You're assuming they know they are sick. This will spiral quickly out of control. Perhaps I was just (again) overstating the obvious (I do that a lot ?). But your point is taken . . .
475 pages of thread demonstrates that we'll go around on this topic again and again... still no closer to solving the world's problems with disease or the appropriate management of risk.

That's the problem when the military gets political. There are 2+ teams in politics. That motto doesn't hit home very well anymore.
Huh? I just thought we wanted to accomplish the mission (i.e., deploy ships and squadrons) and that requires keeping sailors healthy.
Politicians on both sides politicized COVID. I don't think the mandate was political, and it's recision wasn't a military decision.
I disagree. You agree the recision was political, then... Mandated by the legislative branch. Many military members believe the mandate was also political, mandated by the executive branch. Whether you agree is irrelevant to those members feeling like they're on a different team than the ones making the mandate or recision decisions. It was easy to see the mandate would be taken by many as a political decision, whether it was made for that reason or not, so it was likewise easy to predict that the mandate would divide us.
If people are deluded enough to think the vaccine mandate was political then so be it, sometimes you can't fix stupid. As for the mandate coming from the executive branch, where else do folks think military orders come from? Cthulhu?

My point was simply that the "One team, one fight" motto doesn't ring true for many people any more. I think that's manifesting itself in things like low morale and retention issues that are worse than ever. I think those things matter. Others may not. As you say, you can't fix stupid.
I resent the amount of time I had to spend needlessly dealing with Anti-vaxxers and their litany of grievances. It made me less desiring to be in the reserves. Do I get a cookie too?
The classified material debacle that is playing out (for both administrations) i'm sure is doing wonders for retention, morale, esprit de corp, you get the idea . . .
The 70's called and wants its issues back...the 1770's, 1870's and 1970's. Those issues aren't new or unique, having heard political commentary from my middie days to today and recruiting issues regularly occurring throughout our military's history.
Recruiting could be more of a challenge though than in more recent years past though but for a pretty simple reason, there is a smaller pool of eligible recruits now than there has been in the recent past and it will only get worse for the foreseeable future. This isn't a problem that is unique to us either, with many of our allies (and enemies) having far greater issues with both. It has been interesting to see how the military has dealt with this issues, opening up the recruiting pool since I joined has helped, and continues to deal with it in the future.
