Perhaps it is the portion of the hospital designed and equipped to handle Covid patients that is reaching a limit? To take my friend for example, he was at one hospital but on a list to be transferred to a hospital that had specialized equipment, in this case something called an ECMO machine that oxygenates blood. It was a 5 day wait until a spot opened.

It can be a thing, but a lot of times it's much more complicated (surprise!) than what a media headline reports. In your friend's case, ECMO is usually done at a CVICU (cardiac). Not all hospitals, even metro-area hospitals, have that capability (or capacity may be limited because it's not a specialty). So it's possible in your friend's case, it wasn't that there weren't any "COVID wards" available because "capacity," but instead, just normal CVICU availability. I get the end result may be the same, but it's not just because the hospital is "at COVID capacity."

Another thing that can happen is physical space. There may be plenty of capacity, but managing patient space has to be updated. There was a stretch in late 2020 and/or early 2021 where my wife's Peds CVICU unit got moved over to the PICU because they didn't have a lot of patients. They then moved adult COVID patients into the Peds CVICU just to have a place to put them, but capacity itself wasn't the issue. After a couple of weeks, they cleared out the adults as they worked through patient load and then moved the Peds unit back into their original spaces.

"Do as I say, not as I did"
That guy looks over 300 lbs. Overweight people have been told they are high risk and should get vaccinated. He knew the risk and ignored it at his peril. Bad decision. Just like riding a motorcycle without a helmet, or the peacenik couple that tried to bicycle through ISIS territory. Sometimes Darwin happens.

I’m vaccinated btw, and would encourage anyone to get it unless their doctor says not to bc of some unique-to-them medical circumstances.

Of course he knew the risk...He just didn't think it would happen to him.

Every time I crawl under a car to work on it, I know a jack or jackstand could fail. I just don't think it'll happen to me. I make sure I've got some backups to the backups to hopefully keep me from being a smashed grapefruit on the garage floor.

He didn't toss the jack stands in and is now a cautionary tale. At this point, who gives a fuck? You pays your money and take your chances.

I don't think he actually did.

There's a lot of bad gouge out there playing up vax risk, playing down vax efficacy, and playing down Covid risk.
I’m gonna go out a limb that Big Mike could care less about his health! And because of that it cost him the ultimate price! Also I’m sure he had risk factors for several possible bad outcomes (heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, etc..).

Its been said hundreds of time on here. If you are overweight, diabetic, or elderly than you are in the highest risk group and that’s who should be scared and vaccinate!

It's harsh to say it, but... I've seen only about two or three "big Mikes" in the the fresh produce and/or frozen vegetables sections of the grocery stores between March 2020 and right now. For that matter there's one overweight dude I see out walking for exercise in my neighborhood, but only one- and good on him. Everybody else out and about, getting fresh air and exercise, is within healthy BMI (using the old fashioned numbers).

Yeah, it's tragic, really tragic. There are—were—thousands more just like him and there will be thousands more.

I know at least two people, both very intelligent professionals, healthy and young, that know very well the risks to them, don't buy into the bad anti-vax gouge, and are so far not going to get the jab. Agree, there is a bunch of nonsense on the web. But just because someone isn't wanting the vax doesn't mean they are wacko anti-vaxers or otherwise too stupid to see through the crap on the web.

Also some of us had Covid and have natural immunity which is better than the jab!

Look I throw out a lot of shit… Mostly to stir up our resident expert that’s about as wrong and contradictory as Fauci.. But if you are in the high risk category then you should 100% get the vaccine. Healthy and not at risk, personal choice!

Btw. The title of the article sort of implies that he knew the risks! Otherwise it‘s only titled as such to sensationalize. This man was gonna die prematurely due to his lifestyle. Covid just got him first.

Should you be scared?

Somewhat. You should be scared to the same degree as if you are jumping out of an airplane. If you are practicing good rigging and going with a pilot and jump chief you know and trust, and you are selecting for safe weather conditions, you can manage your risk (but never to zero). If you are jumping with a shitty unverified chute at dusk out of a sketchy parachute company you found on Groupon in some backwater location, you might as well be obese, unvaccinated, and letting people cough into your mouth on spring break. It’s all about understanding the degrees of risk and making risk informed decisions.

No I should not be scared and I am not!

I posted this a few pages ago. It’s actual science!

Right. That’s my point. I think we’re agreeing. You are (presumably) a healthy non-elderly person with decent vitamins, no comorbitity, nor compromised immune system. And you probably don’t go around letting spring breakers cough in your mouth. So your risk is extremely low.

I misunderstood you…

I should add that I still avoid large groups and think too many people in one place is the highest of all risks. But that’s easy too cause I never really liked large groups. I would rather go to a small comedy show at the casinos than a concert in the Fedex Forum.
