So this Naval Aviator stops buy today in an Air Force T-37. Just gas and go. He had a long leg comming up and wanted alot of gas, so he pushed down on the tail allowing me to throw not one, but two chocks under the nose gear. This placed the fuel openenings higher than the highest point of the tank, since they are rather close to the leading edge, the tank actually rises some 2-3 inches above them. This allowed me to get 303 gallons in that sucker!! I'm sure this isn't normal operating procedure, so I'm leaving out some non-relevant facts. It was rather funny to me. I took a look in the cockpit to find out that his golf clubs were acting co-pilot.

I had a RON X-Country flight to Wright-Pat AFB in the TA-4 during advanced strike NFO. In the morning my instructor and I walked out to the airplane, threw our gear in and went into ops. there were three T-37 student/intr crews inside bent over charts with computers, plotters, mauals and fuel loggs. I walked up to the planning map on the wall and used my govt issue pen (200 nm lenght) to estimated distance to home base. I reported the distance to my pilot who was getting the weather and he looked over his shoulder and said, "that is about right, we have a full bag of gas so just file the flight plan opposite route we flew up here and we will launch". The AF guys just about dropped their jaws. They weren't even close to a flight plan and we were launching. That my friends is why the Navy T-37 pilot had golf clubs and a unpublished method for gettign more gas into his plane then the AF said was possible.

Im sure at the Advanced level it would be fine to do that in limited cases. Those 37 guys were probably relatively new. You cant tell me that new Navy students are told to break out the pen and say "yeah, thats about right" when planning an accurate x-country.

I guarantee you even advanced AF students in the T-38 don't use the 200 nm pen. It isn't the Air Farce way. They will plan a fuel log to the tenth of a pound for use in a jet with fuel gages accurately read to only every ten pounds. That is the AF way.

Man, you guys keep spelling Air Force wrong. Whats wrong with you guys. Maybe you should use a spell check or something. Also, I guess when I start planning my x-country stuff, I will just unzip and hang that sucker out. Its good for at least 800nm. That is MY way.

Oh yeah, and Blakeness, what do you know about anybody owning anybody. Is that from your multitude of experience from your time as a NROTC midshipmen? Man I wish I would have done NROTC, seems like you guys know everything.

Avfan,
If you got 800 nm you went into the wrong service!! The AF won't let you use it, for nav planning or otherwise:)

I don't know if I want to go to this FBO to gas up... the next day the CO will know what you bought from the vending machine and that your left boot was untied.

anybody want to hear my thoughts on the Navy way of doing business?

go ahead TSPO we all know you're bitter j/k. Seriously, I'm interested in hearing if you don't mind starting an inevitable flame war...which is guaranteed to happen.

The local news here in Denver is a virtual play by play of Air Force Academy brilliance. Hear about the kid who ran a porn website from the academy? That genious is probably the only guy charting anything with his 800nm. Most likely the path from Colorado Springs to Levenworth.
