That's a great write up. The new version will probably have countermeasures. You think? The new aircraft will be able to fly when it loses an engine. I'm guessing the H-3, old as it is, won't exactly fall out of the sky. The new aircraft can withstand a 15 G crash. I'm sure it will be able to get right back up and flying afterwards too.

Kind of funny. It's like someone read another article about the EH-101 project, and then paraphrased w/out actually doing any research. Does anyone know if the -60 and -53 are going to be replaced w/ this bird as well, or just the H-3?

Yeah, I remember when that came about. But it doesn't say whether the other two aircraft are going away.

It is a contender to replace the Air Forces H-60G aircraft.

Yup. Roger. But Marine One is not just the H-3. I'm just talking about Marine One. Maybe I should withdraw the question.

I heard Marine One is a single specific helo, just like AF One. Gator, I'm surprised that you're not smarter about these things.

Um, could have this been a better replacement for the CH-46 than the V-22?

I know it isn't going to happen because V-22 squadrons are already being stood up but,

Can a refueling probe be designed into this helo?
It can auto-rotate, V-22 can not. (I've heard the V-22 "has the glide scope the Space Shuttle")
door gunners? vs the V-22 "belly gun"
AH1 escorts?
Could it carry a squad of Marines?

Yes, it could. The US-101 is in approximately the size and weight class for our Medium airlift capacity and, being a modern helo, is a significant improvement over the CH-46 - makes a lot of the performance gap between the helo and the -22 go away (comparing the -22 to a 40 year old airframe like the -46 is a bit unfair). The Corps are fixed on revolutionary, not evolutionary, though, so no helos.

I don't think the US-101 is being looked at for at least the -53 side right now. The DOD just gave 3 billion and some change to Sikorsky for the CH-53K heavy lift helo. I was at the all helo OAG and it was a 60 feast....especially the S/R stuff and not a word mentioned about the US-101.

The fact the EuroCopter or the Lockheed US version got the Presidential Helo contract was quite a political stink.

I wonder if we can hear from some -22 guys about what they think about this, the comparison between the -101 and the -22...It may just be me but I think I am going to rely on they guys who fly it rather then a college student...

No disrespect intended, its just the facts of life...I thought I "knew" about the -22 when I was in college but after working through primary and talking to dozens of pilots about the good bad and the ugly of the -22 beyond anything I thought previously.

Indeed. Apparently I'm totally out of the loop.

Fair enough. I was demurring from making a straight comparison, anyway. I'm just repeating what I've heard from defense contractors that if we were to replace the -46 with a conventional helo, it would be something like the US101, and moreover, a fair comparison of the -22's capacities would not be against the vehicle it's replacing, but an alternative replacement like the 101.

I agree that a fair comparison would be between the -22 and other possible replacements (101), but I doubt that a new comparison will be made...the -22 is coming just a matter of time. I do wonder however if there is a better replacement that meets the requirements at a lower price (both in lives and money).
