Ahhh, the veranda, one of my favorite views.
One of my favorite views also...except on about 1 or 2 August '67, I was sitting having lunch in that very spot, when the crippled USS FORRESTAL slowly approached Leyte pier, still smoking...flight deck a tangled mess after the disastrous fire of 29 July, '67. There was no joy in Cubi/'Po City that evening & I flew my repaired A-4 back to CONNIE on Yankee Station, the next morning. A sadder sight, I've never seen.:(

In the picture of the COD coming aboard, you can see the two escorts, but there's a smaller vessel ahead of the shotgun. Is that one of the trawlers? Or am I seeing something else?

It looks like a small ship. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Soviet AGI as every battle group seemed to have at least one.

Spanky, were all those photos shot in the SFO bay area?

BTW, that formation seems awful close in the last pic (or is that just an illusion)?
I wouldn't want to be that close with those "egg beaters" on top!

Spanky, is that done with a tilt-shift lens or photoshop? They look great and I love the idea, but it almost seems like there is a very distinct focal zone (like almost too distinct). I don't know if that is a product of editing or shooting with your apeture wide open. Great looking photos, just my perspective. I love to see them, keep 'em coming!

BzB,

For the -60, Parade is a minimum distance of one rotor disc, which would be roughly 65 feet. 1-3 discs is probably what you normally see, though I've had to snuggle up to one disc in some weather before. For the -65, they could potentially be closer since their rotors are shorter. For helos, you also fly with step up instead of step down due to the rotor wash. It's pretty rough and hard to control when you slip below the centerline of the airframe as -2.

Besides, those egg beaters are only an issue if you run into them.

The JBD's were just a grate on the deck? It must have gotten HOT behind those things.
Just a grate, but the horizontal 'vanes' usually directed the hot exhaust gasses up & over the next aircraft in line. Major exception: waiting behind a launching Vigilante (which required full AB to launch, and was too long to use JBD), was like riding a pissed off buckin' bronco through hell!

I was at Subic Bay International, formally known as Cubi Point NAS, in 2009. Saying it was in rough shape would be greatly understating the material condition of the base.

FedEx as based out of there, but they were going to pull out to start basing in mainland China. Otherwise, there was pretty much zero traffic into or out of that airport.
We just pulled in to Subic twice on our last patrol. Nasty.

Wow! Amazing photos man! Your Dad must've had one helluva camera, these pics look like they were just taken. GP's w/o thermal coating, proximity fuze sticks and Shrikes, very cool! The VF-191 jets look like they just came out of depot they're so clean. Thanks for posting.
