Having the old, infirm, and sick self-quarantine at home (like they do every flu season) would be a mitigation strategy.

A nationwide quarantine of all healthy people because of a disease with a 99.9% survivability rating is idiotic.

Do you genuinely think you're more equipped to answer this question than the vast, overwhelming number of professionals who disagree with you?

I would have hoped that with the benefit of hindsight and how poorly some of the posts from a month ago in this thread have aged, people would have taken a moment to reflect instead of doubling down ?

What about the “we’re two weeks behind Italy!” posts from not just this forum but across social media. Did they age well?

Also, to which specific professionals are you referring? Doctors, epidemiologists, the WHO, CDC? Economists, anthropologists, Treasury Secretaries, finance bros? There’s actually lots of different opinions out there. Actual data is showing that this virus has been here longer than was previously thought, and isn’t as deadly as previously thought. Obviously no one can put a definite end to the pandemic, and it will take years to sift through all of the data to make some definite conclusions.

But, in the end, he has a right to come here and express his opinions and exchange ideas, just like you do. You’re no expert on this either. None of us are. Except @Spekkio . Because he understands numbers and statistics, like he said in an earlier post.

We were about 11 days behind Italy, tracking almost identically until we got to about the 65k number. Then we passed them within a few days after hitting 65k.

I’m talking about how we were not going to have enough ICU beds, hospital beds, ventilators, doctors having to make wartime-type decisions about who gets to live or die, etc. That was the overarching theme in all of the fear porn I mean news coverage. And so far, for the VAST majority of America, that hasn’t happened. It could. But that doesn’t seem to be the way the wind is blowing right now. And again, I think the collective point from those of us arguing that economic ruin for America is a much worse consequence is that we need to come up with a WAY FORWARD. Not to end the social distancing, but come up with ways to not reach never before seen unemployment levels in our history. Including the Great Depression.

What happened in NYC is very very sad. But most Americans don’t live in major urban metropolises. So what is working in NYC may not be what’s best for the rest of America. But there’s a reason why there’s so many different medicine types for the same illness - some work better than others in different people. I don’t believe the cure should be worse than the disease. And unemployment rates beyond 25%, which is what they reached in 1932, is not beyond reach if something doesn’t happen fairly soon. Keep New Yorkers on lockdown. But states and cities need to plan NOW for how to get moving before it’s too late and the train has completely left the station.

You mean the professionals who all disagree with each other?

Many of the “professionals” at Stanford medical center believe the virus may have been in California since last fall, and that they’ve already developed herd immunity. This would help explain why California (with a population of over 40 million) has only had 600+ deaths, compared to New York’s 8,000+ deaths.

California may have achieved ‘herd immunity’

If this is true, then the virus was allowed to run rampant for months, with no mitigation measures in place, and hospitals were not overrun with patients.

I don’t like them. But every time I eat them I’m amazed that they were able to do it.

I definitely appreciate how they have been able to replicate so many flavors in jelly beans, however just because you can, doesn't mean you should, of course that can be said about many things.

No post in here aged as poorly as the models from a month ago that said professionals agreed with.

This is actually fascinating. I was picking up some food tonight and perusing an article from the LA Times about how it is now suspected the virus first made way through San Francisco in December/January with all the flights from Asia. Had forgotten about it at that point, but I traveled through SFO/Fresno in late December and was there for several hours and then approx 10 days later (NYE/NYD-ish) had the exact same symptoms as the old 'rona and even gave them to my girlfriend too. Was honestly pretty nasty. Squadron also had a similar illness run rampant the same month. Would explain why Lemoore/Kings county still only has 9 positive cases at this moment and also why California has really not met the brunt of the virus like New York. And for anyone who says I had the flu, was of course forced to get the annual flu shot (I understand there are different strains).

I'm originally from Michigan and what scares me is that the governor has almost unilaterally declared what is essential and non-essential to buy - to the point where paint etc is cordoned off in stores, and you are not allowed to visit anyone at his or her house. At this point it seems like the worst of the virus has passed us by and it is time to start talking about the next steps forward - it's scary that so many rights/privileges have been taken away without any judge or legislature involved. How can the governor say you can't go to someone's house without declaring martial law? Yes, good to have the executive power to make quick decisions while facing a pandemic, but why is one person deciding what everyone in the state can or can't do when the worst of the virus seems to have passed? For that matter, shouldn't we at least be hearing what the actual targets (i.e saying when N<1, 14 days of decreased hospitalizations happen, we reopen the economy) are when these shelter-in-place restrictions are being extended? Right now it seems like the economy will be ruined to eradicate the virus when the original intent was to flatten the curve.

^^^This. And what’s ironic is that the resulting poverty would probably kill far more than any virus would (depression, suicide, etc.)

With a strong economy we can help a lot of people. With a shutdown, we can’t help anyone.

You should apply for a job there so you can go unf**k his program.

Interesting that you talked about my appeal to authority being infallible. Earlier when I talked about our nation’s collective love of models and how we sort of bet on the wrong horse, I was accused of trying to normalize death by the Coronabros.

Now, because I agree with the guy who’s funded by Bill Gates, employed by UW, and whose model is used by Drs. Fauci and Birx to come up with national policy, I’ve been classified by you as “not a smart person in this thread”.

But you’re smarter than him, because he didn’t justify his opinion to you personally. Because you know statistics and numbers. Got it.
I don't know why you have to act like a screaming duche to people who think critically about information presented, especially when you just went back and showed how your infallible professionals even disagree with each other and themselves from a few weeks ago.

The doctor's claims doesn't match the data. Do you have an actual scientific explanation for this? If not then stfu.

Personally, I've had two family members and an in law die from doctor misdiagnosis. They all knew something wasn't right with their treatment plans, but 'the doctor knows best.' It's an inexact science. Good luck with that mentality.

Maybe Professor Knut Whatzhisnutz is who we should be listening to...who knows?

We should have. This would have been over by now if we had.

So pretty much every public health professional worldwide is wrong and we should have listened to a single medical statistician, and if he is wrong it costs us countless more dead. Nah, I'll take my chances with the docs.
