Heat rolling in: Seriously? An element? Man card: Revoked. You know what else you can fit a ton of stuff inside? A purse, but you don't carry one of those around too, do ya?

If you want something you can hose out, get an FJ cruiser. 4WD, can actually tow something, decent mileage, and it doesn't look like an elephant turd on wheels.

Is it odd that the US govt owns GM and Chrysler (more or less) and Toyota can't catch a break? I'm not saying...i'm just saying...

US cars are garbage. We can build trucks, for the most part, but as far as buying something reliable that gets you there and back, go Japanese. Want something with some flash and handling? Buy German. Want something to sit in on the side of the road cursing your purchases while contemplating life? Buy a dodge or a GM.

You had me right till the end. Since 1992 I've only owned trucks; a 1993 F150 with a 300 6 cylinder, a true work horse engine but a piece of shit transmission that left me stranded more than three times. Next a 1999 GMC Z71 Sierra Classic (old body style) I put 350,000 mile on it with only minor repairs before trading it in. Minor repairs being brake job, water pump and alternator type stuff. I currently drive a 2008 Chevy Silverado Z71 and just passed 50,000 with only regular service; I use Amsoil and change the oil every 25,000 miles so it's had two oil changes so far. If I was going to buy a vehicle for a DIY move I'd get a GM, they also have the best resale value the last time I checked.

Well, everyone knows Corvettes are awesome. No other car can come close to the corvette's performance per $$$ ratio. It put cars costing 5 times as much to shame. However, I think the original poster was looking for something more practical thus the recommendations. I myself have been considering one of the 2004-2006 Pontiac GTOs. The reason I choose it over the Vette is it is cheaper, seats four, and I just have a thing for GTOs.

1) AMERICAN ONLY, support the US economy, dont give other countries more money, especially asian countries, they already own most of our debt!
2) Something not suitable for a woman...
3) RWD, no AWD junk
4) V-8
It's not nearly that simple. American cars are often built in places like Mexico and Canada. Meanwhile, Japanese companies are increasingly building their trucks and other cars in North American and United States factories. The workers are American, but the execs (who don't make ridiculous wages for failing their companies like ours do) are in Japan. I don't really care where the execs are.

imports, you are paying extra for the "import"
Because apparently, our government has to make foreign cars more expensive to allow US automakers to "compete."
That's real good for the consumer.

Reliability? American cars are MORE reliable and cheaper to fix than imported cars. I have NEVER had a problem with my vette, and I drive it into the ground every time I get into it. I have about 70K miles, I have put 65k miles on it, and never had a major issue.
Not according to statistical evidence that goes beyond your personal experience.

Buy an American truck if you want, I'm sure it'll do the job. Just don't buy one because you think it's going to be more reliable or more American.

Gtos are good, well mad, powerful cars. I however grew up in a chevy family, but when I see the old goat, or the new age GTO, i show my respect.

Everyone on here is saying American cars are not reliable. I have read every car and driver, road and track, and automobile magazine since I can remember, there is never any statistical data saying that imports will be more reliable than the american cars. This is a rumor. Show me a non-biased source that says this.

I'd rather not buy a new prius, just to find myself sitting by the cash register of the 7-11 because my gas pedal got stuck haha

I took few decision science classes, and Kiichiro Toyoda (Toyota founder) makes quality cars, and has state of the art quality control this and that, but so does every American car manufactuerer. In fact after the war Japan fell way behind in industrial terms and Kiichiro came to the US to copy the Americans regarding the quality of their machines, and carried it over to Asia, where he hired Americans like Frederick W. Taylor to help him try and match the quality the Americans use in making their automobiles. Now Asians are known for quantity and the amount of machines they can crank out, not quality, in their automobiles.

I cannot believe the choice of cars here... STI? Are you kidding me? THE UGLIEST THING EVER. Looks like a mini van, with the same sized engine, that is just turboed, which right there is asking for trouble. You cant try and make a small engine, as powerful as a big engine (v-8) get a naturally aspirated v-8 that pushes horse!

Are you nuts? Didn't you see the head to head where the (4-cyl) STI destroyed the (v-8) Mustang Cobra head to head, in 36 of the 41 events?

Follow these guidelines...
1) AMERICAN ONLY, support the US economy, dont give other countries more money, especially asian countries, they already own most of our debt!
2) Something not suitable for a woman...
3) RWD, no AWD junk
4) V-8

1) I agree with Picaroon...
2) The Subaru is built in Illinois, the Ford in Mexico. Just sayin'
3) RWD? Really? I live in the mountains.
4) I just don't need an engine that big.

Like I said... not the best looking thing on the road. I don't own one. Yeah, the FJ is nice, but thousands more, and the MPG is much worse. If I could have afforded one I'd be driving one.

The second I begin to care about the masculinity of what I drive I will start to consider putting my man card on the line when I suggest vehicles (with a few exceptions).

Garrett- What rock have you been living under?

From the article http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/...reliability-findings/reliability-findings.htm

Domestics: "Of the 48 models we surveyed from those brands, 20 had average scores, and only one, the Malibu V6 sedan, was better than average."

Asian: "Of the 48 models with top reliability scores, 36 were Asian. Toyota accounted for 18; Honda, eight; Nissan, four; and Hyundai/Kia and Subaru, three each. "

To the OP-

I have an 03 Ford Explorer. It is a pretty good all around vehicle. It has a 4.0 V6, 4x4, can tow a decent sized trailer, seats five with plenty of room in the back. I moved home from my college apartment and fit nearly everything in it in one trip with the back seat down. I get 20-21 mpg with a combo of city and highway driving. Is it the best any one area, no. It does well in a lot of areas though. Is it fast? No. Does it break the bank gassing up? About $50-60 a tank. I have yet to get it stuck (including through the 6-8 inches of snow we got in the last week or so). I don't live in a big city, but it has a really good turning radius for parking and in tight parking lots. Some of the Explorers have a 1 inch trailer receiver and some have the 2 inch receiver. Mine has the 1 inch (unfortunately), but I still can easily tow a 21 foot speed boat. I really like it and have had no issues with it at all.

That being said, I still would like to have an F150 four door 4x4.
