I've had that conversation many times. It usually ends like this for me:

"Have you ever heard of an aircraft carrier?"

"Yeah"

"Well... those planes and helicopters are the ones the Navy flies"

"Oh, I thought the Air Force landed on the Navy's ships."

That's not completely unreasonable considering how civilians do not talk about us and think about us on a daily basis. For the uneducated it's makes sense that all planes are the AIR FORCE and all ships are the NAVY, even though each branch has a bit of their own. If people ask, then I'll educate them, but if they're too dense to believe me then it's over.

I foresee another one of my famous thread-jacks turned thread-splits, but here's another common confusion between officer/enlisted career paths.

Them: "Ohh... you're going in the Navy??" (warily)

Me: "yeah"

Them: "Oh, well BE CAREFUL! My ex boyfriend went into the Navy, but his recruiter screwed him over! He was gonna be one of the guys on the big boat that the airplanes are on, but now he cooks"

Me: "Right.... well I'm going in as an officer and a pilot, so it's a bit different. I'm lucky that my recruiter even talked to me in the first place. It's a bit more competitive... And I have a contract that says I'm going to be a pilot if I'm accepted and nothing else."

Them: "Oh, well my ex is an officer too!"

Me: "No, your ex is a Petty Officer"

Them: "Right, an officer"

Me: *facepalm*

Them: "Just be careful"

Yep, spot-on, I hear that one all the time too.

It's funny how the associate the entire military aviation community with the Air Force. I guess it makes sense from a civilians perspective but I just chuckle. The Navy was founded long before the Air Force along with Naval Aviation if I'm not mistaken. Wasn't it the Army Air Corps before the Air Force was officially founded in 1955.

The Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps from 1914-1918, the United State Army Air Service from 1918-1926, the US Army Air Corps from 1926-1941, the US Army Air Forces from 1941-1947 and the US Air Force from 1947 to present.

I visited Cornell a few times when I was a mid, and there was a display in their AFROTC spaces which said something about how in 1947, the Air Force "ended its 33-year-long association with the US Army." (emphasis mine) Umm . . . yeah . . .

Anyone else have difficulties explaining that you can fly even though you wear glasses? I get that one a lot.

Wasn't it the Army Air Corps before the Air Force was officially founded in 1955.

Yeah, I would not even bother mentioning that.....I think the thought of someone not having 20/20 in the cockpit boggles your average person's mind. That said, I didn't realize you AF pilot types could be < 20/20
