Whenever someone mentions HMX-1, two things come to mind.

1. "What the hell are you looking at, CANDIDATE?!?!"

2. "No Photography. Deadly Force Authorized."

HMX-1 (Marine One)

Question, when did HMX1 partisipated in Operation Packard IV.

The high point of May 1950 for HMX-1 was Operation PACKARD IV, which took place during the final week of the month [May 28-31]. On May 23d six HRP–l's and two HO3S–1 helicopters landed on board the USS Mindoro (CVE–120) at Norfolk, Virginia, after which the ship sailed south to a point 15 miles off the coast of Camp Lejeune. The operation lasted only two days during which five HRPs and two HO3Ss carried ashore a total of 120 troops and over 20,000 pounds of cargo.

Global Security has an overview of helicopter integration into Amphibious Assault and detailes of the how Operation Packard was conducted annually to advance technology, develop doctrine and TTPs. Appears your source combined details from several different Operation Packard exercises. For you further reading pleasure a report of the entire Operation Packard exercises and their impact on following combat integration of the helicopter during Korean conflict is also posted there.

It would appear that HMX-1 made it's last visit here to lovely Waco last Tuesday for at least a few years. I had a friend that was asked to take pictures for the Waco Chamber of Commerce. He asked me to join him and carry his equipment, but I had worked 12 hours that day and didn't feel like driving back out to work.

The NG channel has really done a bang up job with the special on AF1 and YutYut1.

Agreed. Those programs had some sweet shots, and a good story of how the day to day stuff works on those birds. Must watch.

Here's a stupid civilian question. The Marine One show was awesome, as was the one on Air Force One, as a wannabe I enjoy learning about this stuff. But don't these types of shows compromise the safety of the missions these aircraft fly?

Do you really think that if there was anything compromising??

So what's going to happen with the HMX-1 Phrogs? Are they gonna transition to the Osprey eventually?

Haven't seen anything on HQMC's aviation plan about it. My guess is they'd just go away. VMX-22 does the OT&E stuff that HMX does with Phrogs. No real need to duplicate efforts. Unless, they want to use it for VIP hops/frags...

Was a Presidential V-22 ever even seriously considered (VV-22)? Or was it assumed it'd be a long time before it was considered "reliable" enough? Or that the prop wash would destroy the White House landscaping?

I thought the info about the narrrow corridor that Marine One flies to the White House, and the path over the fountain was questionable. The use of three "white tops" as a shell game also seemed like information that I wouldn't want out. Maybe this is all common knowledge to folks that live in the D.C. area and it's not a big deal.

Check out page 5-11. It says they're planning on transitioning from the -46 to the V-22 starting in FY17, planning on 2 V-22s the first year and 6 in FY18.

I'm assuming that those aircraft will be used in the support missions of HMX. I suppose it as some assets in that role, namely the self-deployability and commonality with the rest of the Marine Corps.

I don't know how seriously the V-22 was evaluated for transporting the Man, if at all. I think the public controversy over the aircraft probably made the idea problematic, pros and cons aside.

The executive transport mission requires near 100% availability, not a fleet average 65-80%. The parts priority that would require for the V-22 would probably cripple the rest of the transition, in the sense that a part needed for a combat unit would automatically go to HMX if needed there, not to Iraq/Afghanistan. That's one issue alone, out of many. Also, the president only does very short flights in helos--the speed/distance advantage that the V-22 delivers doesn't make enough difference to offset the other factors. The V-22 might come in handy for some missions they do, but not the daily pres/VP transport frags. Pure speculation on my part, no inside knowledge other than casual familiarity here.

They're offloading most of their R/W OT&E to VMX-22 as well, including the 53K, so HMX will probably get a bit smaller over the next few years.
