I thought the worst was when they found out that the standard 'greeting' the crew was giving was not really a 'greeting' after all.......
Let's hear it for the USS Pueblo crew ... the Navy, 7th Fleet, and the Johnson administration left them out on a limb and did nothing to keep it from being cut off. When repatriated the Navy tried to courtmartial the CO Lloyd Bucher and the head of the "research" division aboard the Pueblo, LT Steven Harris. Amazing ... how the Navy always "eats" its own ....

In spite of being abandoned and tortured by the NK's ... the crew never dishonored one another.

QM1 Charlie Law was one of my CWEST instructors @ NUW after he was released. Charlie died in 2001. CDR Bucher died in early 2004.

(left) Some of the crew members displaying the infamous "Hawaiian Good Luck" sign ... as they described it to their captors, before being betrayed by the American media.

Unfortunately, the Pueblo wasn't the only ship screwed over by the Johnson administration. The USS Liberty received the same type of treatment. I recently read James Bamford's book Body Of Secrets which is about the NSA. His take on the Liberty & the Pueblo incidents are interesting to say the least. Overall, I thought it was a well written book.

CV-63 USS Kitty Hawk

I will have to give that one to you, but I was actually thinking of one that is older. It is owned by the Navy but is a USNS ship. I didn't specify so virtual rep points for the Kitty.

Anyone willing to guess the USNS ship?

Missile range instrumentation ship USNS Observation Island, whose primary missions are Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty verification and missile telemetry collection, reached a new benchmark in August as the oldest ship in MSC’s fleet with almost 50 years of service. She is the second oldest active ship in the Navy. USS Constitution is the oldest.

One of my squadrons' UNoffical motto's ...

"CHEAT UNTIL CAUGHT AND THEN LIE .... " ... and while it may offend some of you ... and that's tough ... It never failed us as a "last ditch maneuver" when in extremis ... :)

You know something A4's, I've heard that same sentiment coming from some Army units that I trained with. While I'm not offended by the motto, what gets me is how this totally goes against the creed that I was taught, (and I'm sure you were taught as well), when training to become an officer:

I will not lie, cheat, or steal nor will I tolerate those who do

How do you reconcile the two?

How ??? 'Cause we really didn't believe it nor operate by it ... it was just a "joke" ... to try and sound "tough" and GAF .... :)
