That's my mother.

Actually, it's not really my mother. :icon_tong

I haven't done the tour Brett referenced, but I understand it is a pretty long day - you have to pretty motivated to kill an entire day while in Vegas to see a few holes in the ground. (Especially when another thread elsewhere on AW discusses some of the alternative Vegas entertainment options....). The Sedan crater is impressive, but I wouldn't say it's worth a whole day - I was at the NTS doing some day-job stuff, and we just happened to be in the area for a quick stop and a pic.

I used Google Earth extensively down here at Randolph. When going through the Radar phase (Systems Nav) we would have to "Auto fix" by using Lat/Long of a particular point. Google Earth was far more acurate than using a JNC or even a GNC.

When you go to a Red Flag at Nellis AFB, all the flying is done just north of Area 51. You can look south and see the runway, hangars, etc. They actually brief you on the first day that you can divert there in an emergency but expect to be stuck there for a while.

No kidding? That's interesting, although in the grand scheme of things, it makes sense. It's not like they'd have an Aurora just sitting out on the apron. A friend of mine who was a F-14 RIO said that during one det out to Fallon (or thereabouts), one of the crews blundered into the one restricted area over the site. I guess they were flying in one of the restricted areas nearby. He, of course, didn't see a thing, and quickly exited. When he landed, there was already a black Surburban waiting for him and they immediately wisked him a way. "Later," he came back and everyone asked what happened. All he'd say was, "Don't ask me anything." Apparently they scared him w/ enough NDAs that he didn't want to talk about the "debrief."

I'm only the messenger, so that's the story that was told to me. Schnugg might be able to validate it, as my buddy was a -213 guy about the same time as Schnugg.

Non-disclosure agreement. Fly, I'm disappointed. I thought you were a computer geek enough that you would have seen those referenced before. :)

Yeah, that's a first :) I know what one is, never seen it as NDA though.

Come on, the computer geek one is EULA :)

Lots of times during a flag, they'll let those who are properly read in to fly right through R-4808. Been there, done that, it's just another airfield folks.

I was looking at stuff back home and all the pictures were pre-1991. I know that because we had a tornado come through that spring and wiped everything away.
They must've updated Fenway and other "major" attractions...

Not every region of the country has as up to date imagery. Some will be more up to date than others.

Yeah, I understand that. I still think the potential for what's there (or has been in the past) is pretty interesting on an academic level, though, at least to me. Sure I don't need to know, but it sure would be neat to see/know what they do there, if they still do anything there. And I'm in no way talking about anything "alien" related, as that's just ghey.
