Why no VOR on the boat?

TACAN needle in the C-12 sucked, and tweet didnt even have a TACAN. So my experience is limited. Who needs needless anyways, go go gadget CDI.

No TACAN in the Tweet? Go Air Force. Did you have GPS?

We had a single VOR reciever, and a DME reciever, that would give you DME, but not bearing from a TACAN. Well, it kinda gave you bearing, but no needle, its weird. Defenitly nothing you were allowed to shoot an approach with.

Did have an ILS though, which was cool.

Defenitly no GPS. I flew tails from 1958. The updates were minimal.

The T-6A doesn't have TACAN either. NPA doesn't have a VOR. Ditto Go Air Force.

"Yo quiero TACAN"

WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT?! How did the Navy get duped into buying a NON-TACAN equipped aircraft for a service that still heavily relies on TACAN? Sometimes I shake my head in disbelief.

I believe the VOR is actually more accurate.

Actually, they both say TACAN is theoretically 9 times more accurate, but the wikpedia source states a 1.5-2 times realized improvement. I am not sure what the source is for wikpedia.
Guess my earlier stated belief on VOR accuracy was wrong.....

Yeah, it's screwed up. I haven't heard any official reasons for this state of affairs; but what I have heard is that when the AF and Navy were deciding what to put in the plane, the Navy sent O-3/4's, while the AF sent O-6's to the meetings. Apparently it was going to cost another $10,000+ per plane to equip them with TACAN, which the AF was not interested in shelling out. I'm not 100% sure if this is true or not though.

Funny, stories I've heard, Navy O-3/O-4 aren't afraid of AF O-6 lol

Yeah that sucks.

A sim instructor in bldg. 89 said that we put TACANs on ships so that you hit your IAP away from the ship vice that of a VOR where the IAP is on top of the station thus on top of the ship. Just something I remember from that place. As far as if that holds any truth, what do I know, Im learning to fly P3's.

Yeah that sucks.

Whatever the cause was, it seems like the Navy missed our chance to give input on the T-6.

No Beta + whimpy AF gear = long landing distance.

I suppose this is OK if all your runways are 10,000', but the T-6 will kill split field ops at Whiting and any student landings at most of our OLFs. Awesome.

About the TACAN on the boat, I read an article a few months back (looking for it again now) about the differences between TACAN and VOR. Apparently, the VOR electronics and antennae were just too bulky to put on a ship. The Navy could have just redesigned a VOR slightly, but they decided to make some "improvements." For all the initial hype about greatly improved accuracy, the azimuth accuracy of a TACAN is pretty similar to a VOR.

Also, with the FAA channel coupling, some civil VOR units are operated EXACTLY like TACAN units (needles, flags, DME, etc). The only difference the pilot can see is a larger cone of confusion for a TACAN.

Remember VOR stations are fixed and do not move.

TACANS on ships roll and heave with the ship they're on (to include small boys). LFM smooths out that so you don't see it in the cockpit.

Don't know if you could do that with a VOR.

Are the Navy T-6's still painted in that blue and white scheme? Whatever happened to the orange creamsicle combo?
