Where do you download music?

I was just wondering where people download music. I had a Napster account back in '98 or '99 and haven't downloaded anything since. Is there a place to get free music now that is not going to ruin my computer?

Just looking for people's experiences.

Thanks.

At the risk of sounding prudish, I don't know if the illegal downloading of music is an appropriate topic of discussion for this forum. There are plenty of outlets available and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out where they are.

iTunes. The quality of download is better than half the piss-poor encoded crap you can find elsewhere.

I agree with Brett.

Concur with Brett, I made the mistake of talking about torrents earlier in the year, and then decided to delete my own posts.

If we are switching this to talk about iTunes.... I have been using them for the last year or so, I like the ability to download single songs. Also, since both my daughters have the ipod shuffles, its convenient for them to purchase the ipod 10/20/50 song cards, and input that code number in for them to download.

Torrents are level provided the data being transmitted is legal. But I can see how you'd want to steer away from them on the board. Just like the MP3 format. It's not illegal (some people think it is).

I love my iPod 20GB. One of the best pieces of electronics I've ever bought. I don't even listen to the radio anymore, I just attach my iPod to my tuner.

If you're still in college, myTunes Redux is great. You piggyback off other people in your dorm. The only thing is you can only download stuff from people in your building who are using iTunes at the time, so your options are a little more limited.

Concur with all of the above. iPods can be purchased for a reasonable price nowadays. If you're on deployment, take a poll of the squadron and find out how many would be interested. We negotiated with Apple (using the whole I'm in the military on deployment, etc...) and got them to sell us 60 GB photos for $300 a piece. Of course, they don't ship to FPO so have a friend you can mail it to...

I find they have good deals if you buy a whole album. I could go buy the newest Kanye West CD at the local Tower Records for $14.00, or I could download it off of iTunes for $9.99. There are also a couple places who have the music for cheaper, can't remember the names though, but I hear the sound quality is worse. But definitely, the next step for me is to get an iPod. I found a great deal on refurbished iPod Minis.:icon_smil

Try allofmp3.com. It's a website that looks like it's based out of Europe somewhere, but is mainstream and geared toward American business (if any of that makes sense). Anyways, their encoding is great and you can download songs in almost any format (wma, mp3, etc). You have to sign up, but there's no fees or anything, you just sign up and pay money ($10 to $25 at a time) into an account via debit, credit card, or Paypal. The songs are anywhere from $0.01 to $0.21 apiece depending on size and encoding. So the new Kanye West CD is only like $2. Well, I'm done with my recruiting spiel now, it may sound fishy (and I thought it was at first) but it is completely legit. Check it out for yourself, though.

2nd that. I've used it quite a few times. It's way cheaper and pretty good most of the time. i have had some bad downloads but they didn't cost me very much at all, so it was no big deal. They have a very good selection of songs (not as good as ITunes i imagine, but as I'm still not in the Ipod club, i don't know).

Yes. I also listen to Rage Against The Machine, System of A Down, and countless other artists who spew liberal crap. Really, it's more about the rhythm and harmony, not just the words.
