I'm not really super bought-in to TEOTWAWKI, but a healthy bit of preparedness isn't a bad thing. I do keep a BOB in my trunk, with food, water, means of insulation (a Kifaru Woobie if you're wondering), ammo, first aid kit, and a couple other items. Since my employer is expressly forbidden to ban firearms from vehicles in their parking lot, I always have at least a pistol in the trunk. If I had to drive or walk somewhere on a moments notice, I could do it.
At the house, I'd be throwing guns, dogs and more ammo/water/food into the car and going. 10 mintues to load it all and go. Walking out from home might be a different story, and there are different schools of thought about bugging out v. bugging in.

I keep a bailout bag in the trunk of my car with water, food, ammo, survival gear (knife, fire starter, etc) and an EMT jump kit bag. At home the AR and ammo would go plus three bags to throw in the trunk (or a smaller version to strap onto the Harley to get around the inevitable cars congesting the highway if need be). My wife, dog and I can be gone in 10-15 minutes if necessary.
Just my jump bag and the 9mm. Sold the long gun recently to someone who'd actually use it. In Hurricane territory here in PCola, I'm more worried about being only able to take a backpack as we HURREVAC in a -57. That and I live on the first floor of my apt building, albeit at 200' MSL.
No ammo in my bug out bag. Food, water, sweatshirt/underwear/socks, first aid kit, and 5 gallons of gas is usually strapped in the bed of my truck. People have been surprisingly honest; my spare tank of gas has never been stolen in 4+ years of keeping it in the uncovered bed. It'll probably be gone tomorrow morning, now that I think of it.
All of my guns, and my 100lb crate of ammunition. Bottles of water and whatever food I can get my hands on. Clothing as I see fit. I have a stack of folders full of important life documents in my closet that I could toss in a bag.
My plan is to drive home to Long Island, and link up with my best friend. He has nearly sixty guns, a shitload of ammunition, and always a decent amount of beer in reserve.

My friends and I evacuated from Hurricane Katrina with the misinformed (is it misinformed if EVERYONE thought so) notion we would return a few days later. As such, we left our guns at home. We evacuated with money, full tanks of gas, booze and cartons of cigarettes.
However, other friends of mine who evacuated after the storm drove through tree-strewn streets with their guns on their laps. There were insane stories going through the media that the city was slowly being lost.
Those people who stayed in their "compounds" also had stories to tell. People stocked up on ammo and patrolled their neighborhoods. Tales of boat rescues, sure, but also stories of taking aim and cracking off a few shots at looters and the like. Civilians burned down suspected drug houses, as well as the home of a suspected pedophile priest. Many drug dealers were found shot execution style in the aftermath.
Perhaps this post was misplaced, but maybe someone might get a kick out of it.

Yeah, but you have to replace it with something cheeky and clever- like a thank you note or an IOU. Or an auto parts store coupon for a locking gas cap. Or some kind of survivalist handbook.
You never know when all of your tires might mysteriously end up strewn about the hangar.
I am at my bugout spot now; been here since early 2007. No tornados, hurricanes or earthquakes. 12 years ago a prairie fire got to within about 4 miles; now I have a nice firebreak about 50' wide all around the property. Plenty of water, backup pump for the well, solar, basement for food and a few guns. Lots of medical supplies too.

Doc, this is 2011. VHS? Get with the times. Guys go on cruise now with the digital equivalent of a barge worth of nudie magazines. 1 terrabyte hard drives are like 160 bucks...more than enough porn to last in any EOTWAWKI situation.
Hand guns, couple boxes of ammo, firebox with birth certs, passports, etc., change of clothes, water, $500 cash, $1000 in gold, and all the jewelry I can cram in the backpack. Food as able. Other items and the relative amounts would change depending on the precise evac reason and means of transportation, but this is my general "ready to go in 10 minutes" backpack, all purpose scenario. Except for zombies. Then, we go heavier on ammo, food, and baseball bats.
I had never really thought of this until we were put under "suggested mandatory evacuation" orders while I was in Corpus for Advanced. It's amazing what stuff you can instantly say "leave it" to when you're staring down the face of a natural disaster. Likewise, the kind of stuff you realize you want but don't have when the time comes ("Which car are we taking? Yours. Mine only has 1/3 tank of gas. Well mine only has 1/4. . .; or "They're saying on the news that all the ATMs are out of money and if this thing is big enough credit cards don't work." It's okay I just got money a few days ago; I have . . .crap. . . $36 and a receipt from the O'Club.).
