Hey everyone,
I was just curious as to how much weight people have lost during their time at OCS. I am curious because when I went through enlisted Air force bootcamp I lost 13lbs. The training was only for 6.5 weeks, and was not physically challenging at all. If anyone has already gone through OCS please post how much you lost when you went through.

Thanks,
Slabman

I went there at 212 lbs. at around 14% bodyfat. By the 6th week, I was down to 190 and somewhere around 9%. OCS will burn the fat right off of you. If you are gaining weight, you are doing something wrong or you are eating way too many desserts.

My husband came home from OCS looking like he had been through a famine. I could count all of his ribs and his hip bones were poking out. No, I'm not exaggerating. I couldn't tell you pound wise how much he lost but it sure seemed like a lot. He said he ate a lot but i find that hard to believe. Of course he has a super high metabolism. OCS will take the fat off but be careful that you don't lose healthy muscle too. If you get too low it's a lot harder to gain weight than most people think.

Alot of times I was hearing that as OCS progresses people have a harder time doing the pushups because of the lost weight and muscle but the running supposedly gets easier because of it.

I am one of those people that doesn't have a whole lot of weight to lose. I am only about 150lb. so it should be interesting for me.

ASLAM.

e5b-wife, What was your husbands weight and height before he went in? How long did it take for him to gain the weight back?

Hey Jwilliamsee,
I was in C.E. Utilities specialist (fancy for plumber) I did 4 years from Oct95-Sep99. I was stationed at Tyndall and Kirtland AFB. Now I am finishing up my last semester of college and heading to OCS in OCT. What about you? Are you still in the AF.

After the first couple weeks at OCS you can choose what you eat. The meat dish is almost always something fried and greasy and at lunch and dinner you can have a mountain of spagetti with every meal if you want. You can eat a mountain of carbs at each meal if you want and while the training is strenuous, it isn't exactly BUDS. If weight loss is a goal for you then go easy on the carbs and deserts (if optional) and don't make up for it on liberty, and the pounds will fall off.

slabman, I was in from sept 92-96 and did four years of college and two years of flight training. I was out a shaw AFB in sumpter, South Carolina. I was wondering if there were any ex-enlisted AF guys out there. Why the switch to the navy? For me it was because my recruter was willing to work with me. I have an age waver and a PRK waver. no one else wanted to even talk to me about a flying slot.

How much weight you lose or gain (yes it's possible) at OCS varies from one individual to the next. Just about every person that I know lost weight while at OCS. However, when I went through Marine Corps boot camp I didn't lose or again any weight. Although I'm sure that I will lose a few pounds at OCS. I'm not as lean as I once was, so I'm looking forward to it.

Has anyone been able to maintain muscle mass while at ocs? I'm with aslam, I don't really have anything to lose except muscle definition. Is anyone crazy enough to try and workout when they are on leave? :)

Most people do lose weight, simply because of the fast schedule and abundant PT.
However, if you go there super-fit, you will lose some muscle mass in different areas. For instance, I was a swimmer in college and I sort of got out of shape at OCS. Mostly all you do is run, do push-ups, sit-ups, leg lifts, 8 count body builders, etc. There isn't a whole lot of weight training or circuit training, although if you're there in the winter, it is often too cold to be outside and PT is in the gym, which is very good.

On my weekends, I swam a lot simply because I missed it, and I also wanted to keep in top form. There are pools on base you can use, but I wanted to feel "normal," so I found that there is a great pool at the Univ. of West Florida, about 20 minutes north of base. It's cheap to swim there and it's very nice. They have about 15-20 short-course lanes in an Olympic-size pool and their hours are convenient. On base, there are only like six lanes at the most and the hours suck.
