Wearing your LEATHER FLIGHT JACKET (ADV NFO)

I got my leather jacket issued last week and the folks issuing it said not to wear it until we get winged.

Oh, that's just fucking brilliant. So a bunch of winged aviators - including instructors - tell you it's okay to wear your leather, but you'll go with what some contractor civilians tell you instead? We've been doing this a hell of a lot longer than you have, too, and we're telling you you can wear the fucking thing. If we didn't want you to wear it until you were winged, we wouldn't issue it now. Don't be a chickenshit. :icon_tong

Concur Rob. Over here at 4, leather is authorized and ENCOURAGED.
Buy some AWG's too.:D

Got yours yet, Rob?

Nope, not yet. I am awaiting the final decision before I invest. Good to hear VT-4 & VT86 are on the same page. I still trying to figure out who the LT instructor was that was making a COMMAND decision.

Wearing your issued gear is one thing. Bringing in that issued gear with fleet patches all over it is another. Lean forward and be proud of your aviation community and wear your issued gear. I received my leather jacket at USNA after service selection night (the 'Dant made it happen ... then aviator Captain Prueher later retired ADM Prueher). When I arrived in P-cola I did not do something stupid like put a Tomkitty or Intruder patch on it and strut around. I kept it clean and pristine and I was not afraid to wear it. Then again, I also supported the club (and I don't even drink - it's the commarderie folks), I hanged out as a group with my fellow classmates, and I never phone musterd from jail with my buds after a weekend of shooting ;}.

New guys take note: this is how it's done correctly.

I wore mine a few times, but it never seemed to get too cold in Pensacola. Since finishing the FRS, though, I've wore it nearly every day it's below 65.

Also, looks like the name patch is required on the leather jackets. From the uniform regs...

Page 6-67 (search for "leather jacket")

Someone suggested having them sewn on vice velcro. Is it ok to re-sew name patches on later, or will that damage the leather?

You'll be fine without a name tag. If you feel you must, go with velcro, especially for a name tag w/out wings.

Yeah, too bad it's probably not going to get cold again this season...

Spend some more time in the GMRT Sim building and you'll want to wear some sort of chill-removing device. I wear my winter weight Nomex in there in the hot summers.

Hah, yeah, it is really cold in there. Especially on the weekends when they don't have any of the T-6 sims turned on to add some heat to the building.

Since we're on the subject of wearing things because they are issued, why aren't we issued the winter weight Nomex right off the bat?

They cost a bunch of money, and commands in warmer climates don't usually get them issued. Think of it as a cost savings program. I had to wait until I was at Whidbey Island to get my winter weight.

Quick question for any of you guys who did primary/(more specifically) advanced in lovely Enid, America.

Did you don the leather flight jacket during the winter? All I was issued was summer nomex and i'm cold as balls in that thing. I've worn the jacket before on OHARP, but I don't see any navy guys aside from the winged ones wearing their jackets here.
