Travel vs Proceed?

People going from Advanced to the RAG have been getting travel and proceed time. The travel time is based directly off the Navy milage tables. For every X number of miles, you get a day of travel time. Proceed is additional time to get things in order before you leave or after you arrive. I think you can get up to 4 days proceed.
There may be a difference in how you are payed (per diem, travel allowances, etc), but I am going to leave that for someone else to answer.

That sucks. I know that proceed has to be authorized, whereas travel time is more automatic. Both my roommates went to RAG squadrons in San Diego, and both of them got the full 4 days proceed plus travel time. I guess we will see what I get.

I didn't get any either. But then I only got one day of travel time, Milton to Mayport really isn't that far.

Great post, but a rather confusing read. Have I ever mentioned that I'm glad I'm a pilot rather than Admin:yuck_125:.
Maybe it will make more sense to me when I have my next set of PCS orders.

I have to set this one straight because it's one of the biggest myths in Naval Aviation. It's drilled into people's heads from OCS on about how omnipotent the Chief is and how he's going to train all the JOs, etc. Now, obviously I had a different frame of mind going in, having worked with Chiefs in several squadrons, but JOs need to approach the relationship with the Chief from a position of power. I've seen far too many JOs that are scared of their Chiefs, especially at first, and this can set the tone for how that relationship progresses and even how a JO is seen by the troops in general. It's important to adopt a calm, assertive demeanor around the senior enlisted folks from day one. They have a ton of important things to teach you, but don't let that cloud the fundamental nature of your relationship with them.
Now, I may not recommend this to a boot, non-prior maintainer, but I went down to Maint. Control when I got to my fleet squadron to size them up a bit. There's a bit of territorialism there and getting behind the desk can be kind of an affront to their "Chiefdom." I went right back behind the desk to the Maint. Masterchief's desk to introduce myself and shoot the sh!t a bit, mostly to be friendly, but also to drop my credentials and let all the Maint. Chiefs where I stood. The result? A great tour and an unbelievably positive relationship with both the Chiefs and the rest of the troopers.

Obviously I was joking before, but I appreciate getting some real advice. As an Ensign with no prior service and not much interaction with the enlisted side of the Navy, it is difficult to know how to approach the Chiefs. I'm hoping that being competent, working hard, and having a good attitude will be enough to pull me through until I get some real Navy experience. At the same time, however, I'll be damned if I am going to let my Chief treat me as if my civilian experience doesn't mean anything. After all, there are more ways to become an adult than just in the military. I put myself through college, finished an engineering degree, lived by myself in a few countries, worked as an engineer for a few years, and generally learned what it means to be responsible. Oh, and I'm hoping to pin on a set of wings in a few months. I certainly intend to run my division rather than hiding behind the chief and just hoping I don't F-up.
