Really? Have you tried to get onboard NASNI? I think the 6 gates move so slowly you actually go back in time. When I've gone through NKX's gate, even in the morning rush, they're number one mission seems to be getting everyone through. No ID grab while still giving a crisp salute AND a greeting.

I spent a week going through the gate there during SERE, and while it was admittedly slow as molasses, it seemed to be slow just for the pure volume of vehicles passing through.....I mean you could get stuck on the bridge for half an hour during the wrong time(s) of day. Miramar guards seemed to find more reasons to not let me on base than any other place I have been. I bought a car out of state, registered it in another state (my state of residence), and spent a few weeks waiting for plates/registration. Those were some of the most painful weeks of my time there, basically turning around at the gate and rushing to another one where there was a guard who didn't feel the need to give me the run-around at 0430 in the morning. Maybe it was just me, but I was at least always very friendly and polite.

This. They once (initially) refused to let me on because my facial hair was a little too long...nevermind the fact I was inbound from Mojave Viper where I was growing that stuff out, playing a bad guy in 120 degree heat for weeks on end. Luckily one of the other guards understood my situation and cooler heads prevailed. They also once turned a buddy of mine away for having an excessively wrinkled white T-shirt under his charlies.

Do gate sentries actually have the authority to do that?

I used to come through the gate on base unshaven, etc.. I shaved after the gym.

Authority? No. Illusions that they are displaying unmistakable moral fiber by taking the initiative with their new found powers and newly issued badge to uphold the ideals they feel make Marines special? Yes. The 2nd most dangerous thing in the world behind a Marine Rifleman? An 18 year old Lance Corporal with a badge and side arm. Lord help anyone E-3 and below.

Apropos of nothing whatsoever, there were three things I "decided" (Note 1) early in my Navy life to never fuck with, challenge, or talk back to:
1. A Marine wearing a DI cover
2. A Marine on Guard Post (The 11 General Orders always come to mind...)
3. A shipboard MARDET Marine pummeling down the passageway after "Security Alert" had been called away on the 1MC (I got it...I'm dating myself...)
Note 1: Yes, there are stories...:)
Per the thread "shift of gears"...can't believe that with proper stickers and ID that they'd question your grooming standards...but...I wasn't there. I'm on/off Miramar several times a week...most professional in the county, by my reckoning.

Unless you are the NWSO, the MARDET CO reports to you, and every MARDET Marine had to memorize your picture and name. Then you could do whatever you wanted during a Security Alert.

These particular circumstances can also ensure your safety during a drunken stumble back to the liberty boats while being stalked by a couple of sleazy looking locals......

Yes, the Captain will stand up for his young Marines and to hell with that Intel Officer that was put down in 2 inches of water on the deck outside of the scullery. I don't think he ever used the escalator to the O3 level again after that.

Escalators...takes me back. What were they thinking, putting Ready Rooms on the 2nd Deck? FORRESTAL Class?
Captain: "Hmm...my MSF or the Intel guy by the scullery?" ;)

Not a long story.

Port visit in the USVI, me and my buddy were drunk and slowly stumbling in the general direction we thought the liberty boats were. A young Marine instantly recognized me from having to memorize my picture and stood outside the bar being entertained by our lack of coordination or coherent movement. He spotted a group of 4 locals waiting in the shadows for us to stumble into a darker, less public area to roll us. The Marine started shouting "Security Alert" and Marines seemed to materialize from everywhere. He pointed to me and a group of Marines instantly surround my buddy and I in a protective barrier. He pointed to the locals and another group charged them so they ran away.

Throughout my tour on TR as NWSO, Marines kept showing up at the most opportune times during my liberty drunkenness. I found out later the MARDET 1st Sergeant told the Marines that during liberty they needed to not only look out for each other but also for the MARDET CO, MARDET XO and the NWSO. "Think of them like the bombs" he said, "they are to be protected".

And if it wasn't the Marines watching over me, it was the Weps Dept. AOs (I was also the Asst. Weps Officer). AOs are another group that are very loyal to and protective of their officers - who except for me were all AO LDOs.

And since Weps ran the Beach Guard, I never received the same treatment the other drunks did.... Instead of being clam shelled I was always escorted back to the ship and tucked into my rank.

Of course both the Marines and AOs drank a whole shitload of beer I paid for.
