The Air & Space Museum has a scale model of our Galaxy on the South side of the National Mall.

I think if the sun were the size of a size 12 font period, the galaxy would be the size of the United States.

Not even close. If you don't have time to read the article, it scales the universe 4,000,000,000:1 by making the sun the size of a basketball. Even then, the Milky Way is 125,000,000 miles across.

Nope. If the galaxy was as wide across as the U.S., the sun would be less than 1/3 the width of the thinnest human hair (~6 microns)

Must've been something smaller than a period then. (a .25mm diameter period, with that scale would result in a 41,000 mile wide galaxy). Still visibile though, maybe a grain of dust?
