The way the Air Force works works with their grades is as follows: 40% Checkrides (10% per checkride), 25% daily grades, 20% Commander's ranking, 10% academics, and 5% Stan tests. I am training at Vance right now and I have not found that they give below MIF at the beginning of the block and make you work for it all of the time. It might be that my flight is different, but they believe that if you rocked a maneuver and they could not do it better, then you deserve a 5 as opposed to a 4 or even MIF.
There is only one IP in my flight that does not understand that the maritime folks get screwed when you "make us work for MIF" regardless of our ability early one, hence, he will be receiving the hammer award.
