Hungry for Flight
Yakovlev 3

Soviet Yak 3U

Firing up, front seat, back seat, rear view.

Even got a few minutes at the controls! They were delicate, yet precise. I never experienced such a rate of climb! Fast, loud, smoky... It was a pleasure to make her acquaintance.

Interesting...SARDET used to be part of Wing Six (kinda, sorta, really more a det of base Air Ops; but they had an "F" tailcode, anyway).

I'm thinking that may be a typo. I'm not sure where they'd put them up at Whiting. Bunk, E6B?

CTW 5 Det PCola

Well, they belong to TW-5, but roost at PCola:

The mission of CTW5 Helo Det Pensacola is to provide realistic hoisting to support undergraduate student pilot, flight officer, and aircrewman training. The pilots, aircrewmen and two Sikorsky SH-60F helicopters are fully Search and Rescue capable and can respond to actual rescues, support local area disaster relief, and participate in various medical or emergency exercises.

CTW5 Helo Det Pensacola provides additional services in support of Navy/Air Force water survival training, VIP logistic flights, U. S. Marine Field Support, local area Disaster Relief Drills and MEDEVACs.

I used to ping the crap out of the Blueback with DICASS buoys. I threw a couple of exercise torps her way too. She was a great training asset in her day.

I am the photographer for the picture at the top of this page as well as the one for the TRAWINGFIVE website. We belong to TRAWINGFIVE until we shut down in October of this year. A lot has changed since many of you have known the station. I was there when we retired the UH-3H too. I am the senior AW2 over at the Station Sar Unit. We still keep the "Gulf Runner" callsign.
