For those lovers of really heavy iron... Flint River 603, an RA-5C from RVAH-13, traps on board USS Ranger (CVA-61), summer '74.
(It isn't a 1-wire inflight arrestment... the hookpoint and the wire just happen to occupy the same sightline)

Every time I see a picture of that thing i'm astounded that they actually designed it for a carrier. Amazing.

That pic looks fake. I have NEVER seen a P3 that clean.

You have never seen a US Navy P-3 that clean. Some of the foreign operators keep them in pretty good shape, the Japanese ones I saw were particularly clean inside and out.

The P-2 crews kept the aircraft pretty clean, a wipedown on every postflight with rags and 115/145.

The P-3s, not so much... A trip to the washrack on the monthlys and a trip thru the birdbath after a low level overwater was about all they got in the way of washjobs.

Yeah....except as soon as the JMSDF P-3 rotates....the smoking lamp is lit...and the whole crew fucking smokes according to my buddy Cro-mag that flew along with them. Evidently the ashtrays are zulu coded if they are less than 4.0. I heard that the other funny thing they do is that the flight station just starts punching expendables, (sonobuoys for you whore-nutt guys) up front without the Tacco's consent. I can't imagine that going over very well in any USN squadron....but then the bus drivers up front do control search power....right???

I've only seen them clean when we roll them out of the paint hanger. I've cleaned enough sand out of the insides to fill several sand boxes.

I think the point of that pic was to juxtapose the late model Mike or Lima next to the Bravo on the right.....Flug I didn't realize there were any variants with folding wings either. Brownshoe...were are ya Bubba??

I ran across this picture of an A4 with folding wings. Never saw or heard of one before...

They never had folding wings ... I think this one is a "toy boat"; a mock-up, a model, something conjured up for static display only.

The bird had only a 27 foot wingspan ... that was one of the bennies of the A-4 by Heineman's design: no folding wings.

The link DID provide a couple of the only internet pix I've seen of T-2 'GUN BIRDS', however ... too bad it's copyright. :)

Old R.O. Picture of the Day for 19 December 2008

301_RAF.jpg

A VF-301 F-4S leads an RAF F-4J(UK) in 74 Squadron markings back to NAS Miramar after a flight to test the radar on the F-4J(UK), circa 1983.

The F-4S crew was LCDRs Mike Doerr and Jim Nice. Piloting the F-4J(UK) was CDR Steve Queen, who was the F-4 project lead at NARF North Island. In the backseat was an RAF observer whose name I can't remember.

The Brits bought 15 of the aircraft from the US, and they were brought up to almost F-4S standards at NARF NorIs, except they lacked wing slats and liquid cooling for the AWG-10B. They also had certain UK-specific mods, such as the capability to launch Skyflash missiles and they also had an "Eagle-eye" telescope mounted in the left-side "doghouse" window so the backseater could perform a visual ID when the pilot put the target at boresight.
