In my squadrons it was always enlisted maintenance people that drove the "colorful" paint schemes. Maintenance CPO's - especially airframe/corrision control. They were universally bad.

Then you would have O's acquiesce under the banner of "Yay, team spirit" - the Skipper would get a call from the wing, especially if tvexaircraftvended up in print or television media.

The Navy of the 70's is nothing to be remembered or celebrated.

Bite your tongue, those were the Glory days, many an aircraft had awesome paint schemes :D
