The end of NATO?

A new study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates that casualties from the Russia-Ukraine war have now reached 2 million, with Russia suffering from 1.4 million total including 450,000 KIA. In case you were wondering, that is more folks than we lost in World War II. Ukraine is estimated to have lost 125,000 to 150,000 KIA.

EDIT - Forgot to add this quote from the report:

Russia’s ground offensive has largely stalled, with an average rate of advance of approximately 50 meters per day around Kostiantynivka, 70 meters per day around Pokrovsk, and 90 meters per day around Sloviansk. These are among the slowest rates of advance in any war over the last century.

It has amazed me for years that the casualties and brutality of that war isn't more widely reported in the USA.

Slava Ukraini! Fuck Russia.

It's pretty widely reported, it's just that people don't have a good reason to care. The outcome of this conflict doesn't pragmatically matter to the US other than "fuck Russia," and people who remember the height of the Cold War are dying. Almost no one under age 50 has any reason to be anti-Russian unless their hobbies include international relations porn or they have a job with a high level security clearance.

That and you get widely different numbers depending on whether the source is US, Ukraine, or Russia. The American numbers make me skeptical given Russia has shown no signs of wanting to negotiate a peace settlement.

Disagree. First of all, I'm well under 50.

Second through 7th: Election interference, cyberattacks, ongoing espionage operations, wrongful detention of American citizens, threats to US personnel, and disinformation influence "agitprop" campaigns. Plenty of valid reasons for younger folks to dislike Russia.

To say nothing of an enemy invading a relatively friendly neighbor country and committing war crimes. Things we, you know, used to care about.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: The Ukraine war that Putin started is the cheapest way for us to defeat Russia, with the least amount of American blood and treasure on the line.

Putin doesn't want a peace settlement because he has staked his entire regime on the outcome of this war.

But you do have a high level security clearance.

This just in: Countries spy on each other. More at 11!

Not anymore, and why would that make any difference? None of my arguments involve anything that isn't already public information.

There is a line at the edge of what's normal, and Russia has been way, way over it for a very long time. Be mindful of what behavior you're excusing with your flippant remarks and sweeping generalizations.

I'm not excusing the behavior, it just is... like water is wet.

Are you arguing that supporting Ukraine is going to compel Russia to stop its IO against the US? Wishful thinking.

How is my argument this hard for you to understand?

Per my earlier post, my argument is that the Ukraine war is the best bang-for-buck we have at dismantling a good portion of Russia’s negative influence on the world. Keeping them tied up and losing is absolutely in the USA’s best interest as compared to the alternative of a resurgent Russia.

The IO portion came up separately. Perhaps try re-reading the thread for complete context.
