This was new to me - good friend who has a nephew and she celebrated his completion of active duty as a MD and return to civillian life.

The "Medical Corps SWO" device caught me off guard - so this is a thing? Is this a OOD Underway qualification?

I think they’ve been around a long while. I recall at least one doc wearing one in 2003.

This is similar to the SWSCO pin and provides for Medical Corps and Nurse Corps officers to become "experts" in Surface Warfare.

Here’s what I found…

• The Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer (SWMDO) pin is the culmination of preparation needed to prove that you have successfully completed a sea duty billet. The requirements to obtain your pin is at least six months into your tour, completion of multiple Personal Qualification Standards (PQS) around the ship, and a board that is sat by the Executive Officer (XO), the senior SWMDO, and other Department Heads on the ship at the choosing of the XO.

• Each command will have its own PQS that includes all the requirements needed to prepare for the board. Requirements include, but are not limited to, Officer of the Deck (OOD) training in port, 3M training, observation of sea and anchor detail, replenishment at sea (RAS), and understanding of the reactor, engineering, small boat operations, flight operations, and combat systems, such as radar and communications links. You will have to be proactive and acquire the knowledge and signature from a qualified Officer in each of the areas on your own time. Most of the time you will have other Officers in Medical and Dental who will be going through the process together so work together to have those Officers come to a space for training or go in groups to talk about different topics. Most commands will have their own version of a study guide that will be available for you to use to study.
