I got selected for pilot and my uncle bought me a survival knife that he says I can fly with, but do pilots even fly with those? If they do, is it one that you are supplied with in your gear, or do poeple get their own? Thanks in advance for the info, I dont want him buying me stuff I will not be using. Its a Cold Steel SRK.

Sure, just make sure its readily accessible so you can slay all those bad guys when you bail out of your mighty T-34 over a populated city. Hahahaha. You don't even get your own survival gear... it's all pool gear.

well, it was more ment for flying out in the fleet. but I figured gear in primary is gear in fleet. Didnt know if they had them to cut parachute cords or whatnot. You know relatives, always buying you junk you will not use.

Your vest will have both a knife and a shroud cutter in it already. When you get to the fleet, give your knife to the PRs and, provided it fits, I'm sure they'll put it in your vest for you.

Like Armo is saying, if it fits, you can put up to 4 pounds of stuff in your vest. The standard Navy issue knife is kind of a piece of crap. It dulls very easily. Personally, I don't even carry one, as it's a pain in the butt when you try and sit with it, my flashlight, my HABD bottle, and a holster (when I deploy). A lot of PR shops are putting Leathermans or Gerbers in vests nowadays. The other thing to keep in mind is that there's "less" room on the new vests now. The SV-2s are going away, and they had lots of space in the pockets to put things. W/ the new CMU-33s, everything is worn externally, hence my personal comfort choice. Then again, I carry a Leatherman, so I'm not w/out something.

Hey gatordev, are they having you carry the M9 or the M11?

The P226 (I think...whatever the 9mm one is). There was a thread a while back about sidearms. Not a bad gun, but definately nicer than the Beretta, for me at least.

P226 or P228? Here is the best way to tell...what's your magazine capacity.

I love SIG pistols, I own a P226 9mm myself, first firearm I ever bought...and I'm DAMN happy with it to this day

There are some places around miltion that having a sidearm would be handy if you had to bail out..."Damn gubberment bird man come droppin' on my trailer to take my guns!"

I liked having the knife in my survival vest in case my IP got mad at me.

haha thats good, another reason to use those pistol flares: shoot at the farmer once you land in the farmer's field.

Bulldozer,

I don't think you need to apologize for your uncle buying you the survival tool; it was a nice gesture, and I'm sure it's not junk. You might use it in situations other than flying. We got one for a friend of ours right after they were winged a few years ago, and they use it all the time. What's the point of making fun of somebody over getting a gift :>(
