I was curious how many people are O-3 and above, already established in their platform, and have already gone past their initial obligation or are definately planning to stay in.

I made the poll anonymous in case those people who have decided to get out didn't want to broadcast the information (or those staying in?).

It occurred to me the today that everyone fights over which are the best platforms, but retention might be a good overall indicator as to where the best jobs are ...

Hmmm, I only put Navy choices (because there can only be 10 total, and so putting all services wasn't an option).

I split the choices by what you can pick out of Primary, but since I had an extra space (and it's my poll) I split up P-3 and EP-3.

Maybe I should have stuck SWO in there? Steve?

I was definitely one of those who never planned on staying in. Of course when my time came, the airlines were not hiring and the job market just wasn't up to snuff. So I took the $125,000 bonus, a C-2 OIC job and the rest is history :D I'm coming up on 12 years, I'm an O-4 and my O-5/CO's board is Feb 07. I will have 15 years before I'm eligible to get out so 20 it is for me. My main goal is to make O-5 so as to retire with O-5 pay at the 20 year mark.

Nothing fits in the poll --- cause I'm "OUT" ... BUT ... if I WAS "in" today -- that's where I would stay. We have many, many guys hired over the past 10 years who got 20+ with UNCLE and then came onboard with the airlines. Military 20 year retirement pay and the airlines -- not a bad deal. It was not possible when my number came up - you were either hired by age 31 or you were not gonna' get hired.

Timing, again -- when was it ever anything else?

:icon_lol: It's T-I-M-I-N-G ... You don't think it is BECAUSE YOU'RE GOOD, do you ??? :icon_lol:

Just because someone votes for getting out doesn't mean they hate it man.

(FYI, I didn't vote, my desire/option isn't on there)

Well, I had considered that perhaps the options available to one community on the outside were better, so they'd be more tempted to get out (ie. Jet Blue and Southwest won't take rotary PIC hours), but I kind of dismissed that.

I'm sure that there is a good reason (besides, the sampling is way too small to make a good statistical analysis), and I hope to hell that it has nothing to do with how much people enjoy their work (I just couldn't come up with another good reason).

Anyway, I'm still ecstatic about my choice of platform (if that's what you were wondering) ... I've been aiming this way for seven or eight years now and am not about to decide I hate it before I even get there.

I am intrigued by your lack of choice though ... stay in or get out ... nothing fits?

The three years I spent as a JO in VP were the best times of my life (so far). Even beating out 4 years in Happy Valley at PSU.

(I'm trying to go reserves next, FTS- full time first choice, part time second choice)

I'm going to wager that it pays sh!t.

That's the reality of civilian aviation. You don't make money in most civil aviation jobs.
